Flange/Drive Shaft Seal, Rear Final Drive Installed
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A with universal transmission support V.A.G 1359/2
^ Puller VW 391
^ Seal driver-frt wheel bearing 3143
^ Pulling hook T20143
^ Driver T40109
^ Sealing grease G 052 128 A1
^ 2 hex bolts M 8 x 30
Removing
^ Rear final drive installed
Observe general repair notes.
- Remove rear part of exhaust system from clamping sleeves - arrows -.
- Disconnect driveshaft from rear final drive and tie up.
- Place Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A with universal transmission support V.A.G 1359/2 under rear final drive.
- Remove securing bolts from transmission support - arrows -.
- Lower final drive carefully until flange/driveshaft is accessible.
- Remove circlip - arrow -.
CAUTION!
If circlip is over-stretched or damaged, it must be replaced by a new circlip of the same thickness.
- Install 2 hex bolts M 8 x 30 - arrow - in flange.
- Place drip tray underneath.
- Pull off drive shaft flange using puller VW 391.
- Carefully push oil seal on top, outer circumference - arrow - slightly inward.
- Then pry out obliquely set oil seal.
CAUTION!
Make sure that contact surface for shaft oil seal is not damaged on the drive pinion.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Coat outer edge of gasket with axle oil.
- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease G 052 128 A1.
- Drive in new seal to stop, without canting seal.
- Heat flange/driveshaft to a maximum of 80 degree.
CAUTION!
Wear protective gloves
- Drive on flange/driveshaft far enough until circlip can be installed.
- Install circlip - arrow -.
- Tighten securing bolts of transmission support - arrows -.
- Then install driveshaft to rear final drive.
- Axle oil in rear final drive, checking.
- Install rear part of exhaust system.
