Selector Lever Cable, (Through VIN 8E_6A156499), Removing and Installing



Selector lever cable, (through VIN 8E_6A156499), removing and installing - 01J, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required





^ Pry lever 80-200

Removing

- Place selector lever in position "P".





- Loosen quick-release screws - 2 - and - 3 - and remove rear noise insulation.

Vehicles with 4-cyl. engine:





- Remove vehicle floor plates at inside left - 2 - and inside right - 1 -.





- Remove rear cross member for vehicle floor, remove bolts - 1 through 4 - to do so.

All:





- Remove bolts - 1 through 6 - and remove front cross member for vehicle floor.

Note:
^ Depicted in illustration for a vehicle with 4-cyl. engine.





Note:
^ Flex joint in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10 degrees, otherwise it may be damaged.

- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamp - arrows -.

Note:

- Remove heat shield below shift mechanism.





- Remove bracket - 3 - for selector lever cable by first removing bolts - 2 -.





- Using pry lever 80-200, press selector lever cable - A - from lever for selector shaft - arrow -.





- Remove lower cover from shift mechanism - arrows -.
- Detach selector lever cable sleeve from shift mechanism bottom cover and slide back.





- Remove retaining clip - 1 - for selector lever cable on shift mechanism downward.
- Pull plastic securing spring - 2 - slightly to front and push pin - 3 - upward only as far as necessary - arrow -.

Note:
^ Make sure that pin is not pushed fully out.

- Remove selector lever cable - 4 - from shift mechanism.

Note:
^ Do not bend or kink selector lever cable.





- Loosen lock nuts - 6 - and remove selector lever cable - 5 - from support bracket - 4 -.

Note:
^ Do not bend or kink selector lever cable.

Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:

^ Do not bend or kink selector lever cable.
^ Lightly grease eyelet and ball socket of selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease G 052 142 A2 before installing.





- Slide selector lever cable into shift mechanism and secure it with retaining clip - 1 -.

^ Installation position: Angled end of retaining clip points toward rear.

- Insert end of selector lever cable - 4 - into selector lever joint.
- Press pin - 3 - downward - arrow -.
- Check whether plastic securing spring - 2 - has locked the pin.
- Button selector lever cable boot into lower cover.





- Bolt lower cover securely to shift mechanism - arrows -.





- Tightly bolt selector lever cable - 5 - to support bracket - 4 -, tighten lock nuts - 6 - to 12 Nm.





- Press selector shaft lever - A - on transmission completely toward rear - arrow - until parking lock engages.





- Check whether selector lever is in position "P", then press ball socket of selector lever cable - 5 - carefully onto lever for selector shaft - 7 -.

Note:
^ Take care not to bend selector shaft lever when pressing it on; support it if necessary, as otherwise selector mechanism can no longer be adjusted properly.

- Adjust selector lever cable.
- Install exhaust system and align it free of tension.
