Selector Lever Cable (From VIN 8E_6A156500), Removing and Installing



Selector lever cable (from VIN 8E_6A156500), removing and installing - 01J, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required





^ Pry lever 80-200





^ Socket and key T40031

Removing

- Remove selector lever handle.
- Remove cover for shift mechanism.
- Place selector lever in position "D".





- Loosen rear clamping screw on selector lever cable through hole in shift mechanism approx. one turn using socket and key T40031.

Note:
^ Loosen clamping screw only approx. 1 turn. Do not remove.
^ Clamping screw is only accessible in selector lever position "D".
^ Selector lever must remain in position "D" while clamping screw is loose.

Removing





- Loosen quick-release screws - 2 - and - 3 - and remove rear noise insulation.





- Remove tunnel braces.

Note:
^ Flex joint in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10 degrees, otherwise it may be damaged.





- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamps - arrows -.
- Remove heat shield under shift mechanism.





For vehicles with noise insulation - A - under shift mechanism:

- Remove lock washers - arrows -.

Note:
^ Always replace lock washers

- Remove sound insulation - A - and slide forward.

All:





- Remove selector lever cable retaining clip - 1 - sideways.
- Remove selector lever cable - 2 - from shift mechanism.

Note:
^ Do not bend or kink selector lever cable.

Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:

Torque specifications

Note:
^ Do not bend or kink selector lever cable.
^ Lightly grease eyelet and ball socket of selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease G 052 142 A2 before installing.





For vehicles with noise insulation - A - under shift mechanism:

- Slide noise insulation - A - over opening on selector lever cable.

All:





- Replace O-ring - 1 - on selector lever cable.
- Slide selector lever cable into shift mechanism - arrow -.





- Secure selector lever cable - 2 - to shift mechanism with retaining clip - 1 -.

^ Installation position: Angled end of retaining clip faces toward shift mechanism.





For vehicles with noise insulation - A - under shift mechanism:

- Secure sound insulation to shift mechanism with four new lock washers - arrows -.

All:





- Tightly bolt selector lever cable - 5 - to support bracket - 4 -, tighten lock nuts - 6 -.





- Press selector shaft lever - A - on transmission completely toward rear - arrow - until parking lock engages.

Note:
^ When parking lock is engaged, it must not be possible to turn both front wheels in one direction at the same time.

- Then press selector shaft forward 3 detents, so transmission is in "D" position.
- Ensure selector lever in vehicle is also in "D" position.





- Carefully press selector lever cable ball socket - 5 - onto selector shaft lever - 7 - in this position.

Note:
^ Take care not to bend selector shaft lever when pressing it on; support it if necessary, as otherwise selector mechanism can no longer be adjusted properly.





- Check exact position of selector lever in position "D" by pushing selector lever lightly towards drivers seat - arrow A -.

Note:
^ Do not touch selector lever during the adjustment.

- Tighten clamping screw with Socket T40031 through hole in shift mechanism while in this position, without touching selector lever.
- Adjust selector lever cable.
- Install exhaust system and align it free of tension.
