Selector Lever Cable Adjusting
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Socket and key (T40031)
- Remove the cover for the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism Cover ] Shift Mechanism Cover.
• There is a distinction between vehicles with "PRND" shift mechanisms (up to model year 2004) and vehicles with "PRNDS" shift mechanisms (as of model year 2005).
• In vehicles with "PRND" the shift mechanism (through model year 2004), selector lever cable adjustment is performed with the selector lever in the "D" position.
• In vehicles with "PRNDS" the shift mechanism (from model year 2005), selector lever cable adjustment is performed with the selector lever in the "S" position.
Vehicles With a "PRND" Shift Mechanism
- Place the selector lever in the "D" position.
- Loosen the rear clamping screw on the selector lever cable through the hole in the shift mechanism approximately one turn using the socket and key (T40031).
• Loosen the clamping screw only approximately 1 turn. Do not remove.
• The clamping screw is only accessible in selector lever position " D".
• The selector lever must remain in the "D" position while the clamping screw is loose.
- Carefully move the selector lever lightly toward the front and rear without shifting into another lever position, this releases the tension on selector lever cable.
- Check the exact position of the selector lever in the "D" position by pushing the selector lever lightly towards the driver's seat - arrow A -.
• Do not touch the selector lever during the adjustment.
- Without touching the selector lever, tighten the clamping screw in this position using the socket and key (T40031).
Vehicles With a "PRNDS" Shift Mechanism
- Place the selector lever in the "S" position.
- Loosen the rear clamping screw on the selector lever cable through the hole in the shift mechanism approximately one turn using the socket and key (T40031).
• Loosen the clamping screw only 1 turn. Do not remove.
• The clamping screw is only accessible in selector lever position " S".
• The selector lever must remain in the "S" position with the clamping screw loosened, otherwise the setting is not correct.
- Carefully move the selector lever forwards and backwards slightly without shifting to a different lever position.
- Pull the selector lever completely toward the rear once more until it stops in the "S" position and release the selector lever.
• Do not touch the selector lever during the adjustment.
- Without touching the selector lever, tighten the clamping screw in this position using the socket and key (T40031).
Continuation for All
- Install the cover for the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism Cover ] Shift Mechanism Cover.
- Check the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism Checking ] Shift Mechanism Checking.
• Using the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051 A), the position of the multi-function Transmission Range (TR) switch (F125) can be compared to the position on the selector lever via On Board Diagnostic (OBD), 02 - Transmission electronics, 08 - Read measured value block, display group 2 in display field - 1 -.
If the shift mechanism does not function properly after adjusting:
- Perform the selector lever cable basic setting. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Basic Setting ] Procedures.
