Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1410)
• Brake pedal actuator (V.A.G 1869/2)
• Piston resetting tool (T10145)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)
Removing
• Mark the brake pads when removing them if they are to be reused. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
- Remove the wheels and tires.
- On vehicles equipped with a brake pad wear indicator, disconnect the electrical connector - 1 -.
- Lift the locating lug slightly on the lower part of connector - 2 - and turn 90 degrees.
- Pull the connector lower part out of the bracket.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove the securing bolts from the brake caliper housing, while counter holding the guide pins.
- Swing the brake caliper housing upward and remove the brake pads.
- Press the piston back into the caliper housing.
• Press the piston back into the cylinder with piston resetting tool (T10145), before inserting new brake pads. Before pressing the piston back, extract some brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle. Otherwise, fluid can overflow and cause damage, particularly if the reservoir has been topped off.
CAUTION!
Brake fluid is poisonous and must never be extracted by mouth using a hose!
Installing
Use methylated spirits to clean the brake caliper housing.
- Install the brake pads.
- Swing the brake caliper housing down and tighten the bolts to 30 Nm.
• The repair kit includes four self locking bolts which must be installed.
• After replacing the brake pads, depress the brake pedal firmly several times with the vehicle stationary so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
- Install the wheels and tires. Refer to => Steering and Suspension Steering and Suspension
- Check the brake fluid level and top off if necessary.
