Selector Shaft, Transmission Installed

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

• Sleeve (VW 423)

• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)

• Assembly Sleeve (01E 311 120)

• Thread Locking Compound (AMV 185 101 A1)

Removing

- Loosen screws or quick-release connectors - 1 - and - 2 - and remove front noise insulation - A -.





- If equipped, loosen quick-release connectors - 3 - and remove rear noise insulation - B -.

- Remove the right, and left if applicable, drive axle heat shield - arrow -.





- Remove the right front exhaust pipe.

- Remove selector rod connecting rod - 2 -.





• Disregard - 1 -.

- Remove the nut - arrow - and remove the selector shaft lever from the transmission selector shaft.





- Disconnect electrical harness connector - arrow - at Back-Up Light Switch (F4).





- Remove the bolts - arrows - and remove selector shaft cover - A -.





- Remove both selector shaft locking bolts - 1 -.





• Make sure a gear is not engaged.

- Slide the selector shaft - 2 - into transmission all the way and remove the bolt - 3 -.

- Pull out selector shaft.

- Carefully pry out seal using screwdriver.





Installing

• Replace the seals and O-rings.

- Install selector shaft.

• Installation position: Flattened part of selector shaft - B - faces downward.





• Ignore - A - and - C -.

- Slide the selector shaft - 2 - into transmission all the way and install the bolt - 3 -.





• Installation position: The groove - arrow - on the bolt - 3 - faces the selector shaft cover.

- Clean locking bolt threads - 1 - with a wire brush. Then insert bolts with Locking Compound (AMV 185 101 A1 ) and tighten to 45 Nm.

- Install the cover - A - with an O-ring.





- Clean bolt threads - arrows - with a wire brush. Install the bolts with Locking Fluid (AMV 185 101 A1 ) and tighten.

• To install the seal - C - without damaging it, use Assembly Sleeve (01E 311 120) - A -.





- Lightly oil outer circumference of seal - arrow -.





- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with Sealing Grease (G 052 128 A1).

- Install the sealing ring - arrow - into the housing up to the stop.

- Install the front exhaust pipe and adjust it so that it is free of tension.





- Remove the right, and left if applicable, driveshaft heat shield - arrow -.
