Flange Shaft Seal and Ball Bearing, Replacing

Remove the center differential housing - A - (transmission installed). Refer to => [ Self-Locking Center Differential, Transmission Installed ] Self-Locking Center Differential, Transmission Installed.





Remove the center differential housing - A - (transmission removed). Refer to => [ Transmission, Assembly Sequence ] Transmission, Assembly Sequence.

Pressing out flange shaft





- Remove the circlip before remove the flange shaft. Refer to => [ Circlip Installation Positions and ].

- Position the center differential housing so the flange shaft does not come into contact with the Thrust Pieces (VW 401) and (VW 402) when pressing it off.

Pressing in flange shaft





- Tighten the vibration damper, if applicable, before pressing the flange shaft in.

• If a sealing ring is installed with additional dust lip. Refer to => [ Differentiation of Sealing Rings ] , a flange shaft must be installed with a groove => [ From Build Date 03 08 4 - Flange Shaft with
Groove and Sealing Ring with Additional Dust Lip ]. Allocate the components.

- Support the flange shaft with the Thrust Plate ( 2050).

- Install the flange shaft circlip. Refer to => [ Circlip Installation Positions and ].

Pry off the sealing ring





From Build Date 03 08 4 - Flange Shaft with Groove - arrow A - and Sealing Ring with Additional Dust Lip - arrow B -





• Sealing ring with additional dust lip - arrow B - must be installed in connection with flange shaft with groove - arrow A -.

A Sealing ring - through build date 29 08 4- without the additional dust lip - arrow 1 -.
B Sealing ring - from build date 30 08 4- with additional dust lip - arrow 2 -.

A Shim (016 311 391 A ) (1.4 mm thick)
B Oil seal

- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with Sealing Grease (G 052 128 A1).

- Set washer and seal onto tool as shown.

• Installation position: The open side of the sealing ring faces the center differential housing

- Remove the shim.

Pressing Out Ball Bearing for Flange Shaft





- Remove the circlip and sleeve before removing the ball bearing. Refer to => [ Circlip Installation Positions and ].

Installing the Flange Shaft Ball Bearing





- Install the sleeve.

- Install the ball bearing circlip and sleeve. Refer to => [ Circlip Installation Positions and ].
