Steel Stub Axle Carrier/Wheel Bearing Housing






Steel Stub Axle Carrier/Wheel Bearing Housing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Grease Cap Puller (VW 637/2)

Fitting Sleeve (3241/4)

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1410)

Ring Spanner Insert AF 21 (T40027)

Removing

- Remove wheel covers, remove cover cap on light-alloy wheels (removal hook in vehicle tool kit).

With FWD

If wheel bearing unit is not replaced, do not remove collar bolt and dust cap.

- Remove wheel.

- Loosen dust cap from seat by lightly tapping on claws.





- Press of dust cap.





- Mount wheel and place vehicle on wheels.

Continuation for all vehicles

- Loosen collar bolt - arrow - only 90°, otherwise wheel bearing will be damaged





CAUTION!
When loosening and tightening collar bolt, vehicle must stand on wheels. Risk of accident.

- Dismount tire.

- Secure the brake disc with a wheel bolt.

- Remove brake caliper - arrows -. To do so, use Socket Insert (T40027).





Secure brake caliper to body with wire.

Do not allow brake caliper to hang from brake line.

- Remove disc brake.

- Remove coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Service and Repair.

- Remove collar bolt - 1 -.





- Remove cover plate - 3 -.

With FWD

- Remove wheel bearing unit - 2 -.





If wheel bearing unit can be removed from stub axle carrier by hand, wheel bearing unit is OK and can be reinstalled.

Continuation for all vehicles

- Remove speed sensor - 2 -.





- Mark eccentric bolt position - 1 - at top of stub axle carrier/wheel bearing housing, e.g. with a felt-tip pen.

- Separate connections listed in sequence: Items 5, 3, 4 and 1.

- Remove stub axle carrier or wheel bearing housing.

Carefully press drive axle off on all wheel drive vehicles.

Installing

Replace bolts and self-locking nuts. Notes in exploded view diagrams. Refer to => [ Subframe ] FWD.

Bonded rubber bushings have a limited torsional range. Only tighten threaded connections at control arms if vehicle is in curb weight position. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing, Lifting to Curb Weight Position ] Rear Suspension

With FWD

- Install new wheel bearing unit if necessary. Note.

Continuation for all vehicles

- Tighten connections - 1 -, - 3 -, - 4 - and - 5 -.





- Secure speed sensor - 2 -

- Install cover plate and brake caliper at stub axle carrier or wheel bearing housing.

All Wheel Drive

- Tighten 5 wheel bolts and tighten parking brake.

Continuation for all vehicles

- First tighten collar bolt - 1 - only to pre-tightening specification without additional turning (turn additionally when vehicle is resting on wheels).





- Install coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Service and Repair.

- Mount wheel and tighten.

Tightening specifications:

Item 1 - (Bring eccentric bolt into previously marked position)






- Tighten collar bolt - 1.

With FWD

- Dismount tire.

- Drive on a new dust cap.

- Mount wheel and tighten.

Damaged (dented) protective caps must be replaced.

Damaged (dented) protective caps allow moisture to enter. Therefore, always use the tool shown.





Continuation for all vehicles

- Perform vehicle alignment. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.

Alignment must take place on a VW/Audi recommended alignment stand.
