Power Steering Pump: Testing and Inspection

Vehicles with 4-cyl. engines and 6-cyl. diesel engines

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. 3094
^ Power steering tester V.A.G. 1402
^ Adapter V.A.G. 1402/3

- Clamp intake and return lines with hose clamps - 3094
- Remove pressure hose from power steering pump.
- Screw adapter VAG 1402/3 into power steering pump in place of banjo bolt.
- Connect hose from pressure gauge VAG 1402 onto adapter VAG 1402/3.
- Close shut-off valve on pressure gauge (lever pointing to left).
- Remove hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. 3094.

Note:
^ To avoid damage to pump, note the following:
^ Pressure gauge shut-off valve must not remain closed for more than 10 seconds during this test.
^ Start engine without pressing accelerator and leave it running at idling speed.
^ Take pump pressure reading at idling speed immediately after starting engine (have second mechanic take reading).
^ The pressure will drop during the test, take the highest pressure reading as the test value

- Start engine and if necessary, top off fluid in reservoir.
- Read off gauge pressure with engine at idling speed (measurement must not take longer than 10 seconds).

Pump pressure specification:

Engine Pump - Pump pressure (bar)
4-cyl. gasoline engines 8E0 145 153 B8E0 145 1538E0 145 155 L 110 to 118 110 to 118 110 to 118

Replace power steering pump if specification is not attained.
- Stop engine.
- Remove pressure gauge.
- Connect pressure line to power steering pump with banjo bolt.
- Check hydraulic fluid level.
- Check steering system for leaks.
- Bleed steering system.
