Triple Roller Joint (Front)

Triple roller joint, disassembling
- Clamp drive axle in vise.

Note:
^ Use protective jaws.

- Open clamp at CV joint and slide back CV boot.





- Bend open metal tabs with a flat tip screwdriver and pry off cover.





- Mark installation positions of parts 1 to 3 in relation to each other before disassembling.

If they are not marked and are not re-installed in their previously installed positions, noises may occur later during driving operation.

Use a waterproof felt-tip pen for marking.

- Remove O-ring - arrow - from groove.
- Hold joint body and remove drive axle from vise.





- Remove circlip from triple roller joint/drive axle.

1 - Circlip pliers (normal commercial type)
- If boot is damaged, remove it using scissors or similar. Otherwise carefully push it back.
- Insert drive axle in press.





- Hold drive axle, then press triple roller joint off drive axle.

Make sure rollers are free when pressing off.
- Remove triple roller joint with rollers and place on a clean surface.
- Pull joint body off drive axle.
- Pull boot off drive axle.
- Clean drive axle, joint body and groove for oil seal.

- Push joint boot onto drive axle.
- Slide joint body onto drive axle.

Installing triple roller spider
Chamfer on star faces toward shaft and is used as an assembly aid.





- Install triple roller star onto shaft according to markings and drive onto stop.

A second mechanic is required to push boot back.

Use tube trans drive shaft VW426 shown in illustration.

Install circlip (ensure proper seating).
- Press 80 grams of drive axle grease from repair kit into triple roller joint.
- Slide joint body over rollers and hold in position.
- Press 30 grams of drive axle grease from repair kit into rear of triple roller joint.
- Install joint boot. The bead on the CV joint boot must engage in the joint body groove.
- Remove drive axle from vise and clamp joint body in position in vise.





- Insert new seal - arrow - from repair kit into groove.





- Install new cover on joint body. Holes in cover and joint must align.
- Install clamp
