Engine - Oil Pressure Warning Temps Below Freezing

17 Oil pressure warning at temperatures below freezing

17 08 25

2017076/2

November 21, 2008. Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 17 number 08-02 dated January 24, 2008 for reasons listed below.

Vehicle Information

Condition

Immediately following an engine cold start with very low ambient temperatures (below -10 degree C / -15 degree C or 14 degree F / 5 degree F).

- The engine oil pressure too low warning light is illuminated.

- The engine is abnormally noisy and rattling.

The complaint may occur on vehicles that are operated in extreme conditions such as mainly used for very short distance operation or where the engine operating temperature is often not reached after a cold start.

Technical Background

The moisture collecting in the oil pan under extreme conditions may freeze with very cold temperature, and the resulting ice crystals may restrict the strainer of the oil pump intake pipe. This slows the buildup of the oil pressure at cold start.

Production Solution

- Optimized the ECM SW (same SW as RVU I3).

- Optimized the design of the oil pump intake pipe Part No. 06F 115 251 B.

Service

1. Install the optimized oil pump intake pipe (Part No. 06F 115 251 B).

2. Check to see if RVU I3 applies to the vehicle and if it has been performed. The ECM software update below is identical to the procedure described for RVU I3.

- If RVU I3 applies to the vehicle, and it has not been performed, proceed to Step 3 (Perform RVU I3; see also RVU I3 document.)

- If RVU I3 does not apply to the vehicle or if it has already been performed, no ECM update is necessary. Proceed to Step 5.

ECM Software Update

3. Check the ECM to ensure it has not been tuned.

NOTE:
Any Update Programming procedure (flash) may overwrite any tuned ECM or TCM programming. A tuned ECM or TCM is described as any ECM or TCM altered so as to perform outside the normal parameters and specifications approved by Audi of America, Inc.

Current Tuned ECM or TCM Requirements

If you encounter a vehicle with a tuned ECM or TCM, your dealership must do the following before performing any procedure that updates ECM or TCM programming:

a. Notify the owner that their ECM or TCM was found to have been tuned.

b. Notify the owner that any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM or TCM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Audi of America, Inc. warranties.

c. Obtain the owner's written consent (see Control Module Tuning form) for any requested repair - under warranty or outside warranty - that requires flashing that will automatically overwrite the tuned program.

4. Update the ECM.

a. If the vehicle has a tuned ECM or TCM, ensure the Control Module Tuning form has been filled out by the owner.

b. Check the software part number and software level in the Engine Control Module.

c. Prior to beginning the SVM process, insert a USB memory stick into the VAS 505X tester to capture the diagnostic log electronically.

d. For A4 (B7) always use the 6017B K-Line Adapter to ensure communication to all modules.

e. Update the Engine Control Module using the SVM action code as listed in the table below.

Note
Do not use a 6017 or 6017A while flashing. Doing so may result in complete control module failure.

Tip:

- The SVM Process must be completed in its entirety so the database receives the update confirmation response. A warranty claim may not be reimbursed if there is no confirmation response to support the claim.

- The electric cooling fan may be activated during the ECM updating procedure.

For further SVM update instructions and troubleshooting, please refer to the SVM Operating Manual; ElsaWeb TSB 2011732.

5. In case of further engine damage, perform all necessary repairs following the indications of ElsaWeb Repair Manual. These repairs are not part of this TSB.

6. Before using the engine again, replace the engine oil and engine oil filter.

Tip:
Perform the following service solution only if all the specified criteria in the Condition match exactly; otherwise, the warranty claim may be rejected. Other complaints cannot be resolved with this service solution, and this would lead to repeat repairs.

Warranty

When procedure applies to vehicles under warranty, use the following:
For the ECM software update observe the accounting instructions and details of RVU I3.
