Shift mechanism, adjusting, 02M/02Y, 5 & 6 Speed M/T, AWD

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required





^ Connecting pin T10027

Adjustment requirements
^ Components of shift mechanism and linkage must be in proper working condition.
^ Shift mechanism moves freely
^ Transmission, clutch and clutch mechanism in proper working condition.
^ Transmission in neutral





Work procedure
- Remove left front cover - arrows -.





Vehicles with 6 cylinders Engine:
- Unclip protective cover - 1 - for electrical wires.
- Fold up fuse box bracket - arrows -.





All:
- Disengage cable locking mechanism for shift and selector cable, to do so, press casing in direction of - arrow 1 - to stop and engage by turning left in direction of - arrow 2 -.





Transmission up to approx. 04.2003:
- Secure shift rod, to do so, press shift rod lever - 1 - down in direction of - arrow A - into gate 1st/2nd gear.
- At the same time, press lock bolt - 2 - in direction of - arrow B - into transmission until it engages.
^ This locks shift rod, it can no longer be moved.





Transmission as of approx. 04.2003:
- Secure shift rod, to do so, press shift rod down in direction of - arrow 1 -.
- While pressing down shift rod, rotate bracket - A - upward in direction of - arrow 3 - and simultaneously press it in direction of -arrow 2 - until it engages in shift rod.
^ This locks shift rod, it can no longer be moved.





All:
- Remove shift knob - 1 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 -.
- Remove retaining ring - 3 - and cover - 4 - upward.





- Secure shift lever, to do so, guide shift lever in idle position toward left into gate 1st/2nd gear.
- Secure rod in this position using connecting pin T10027.





- Make sure that selector cable - 1 - and shift cable - 2 - are engaged free of tension in locking mechanism - 3 -.
- Turn casings - 4 - in direction of - arrow - to stop and release.
^ The spring presses securing mechanism into initial position.





Transmission up to approx. 04.2003:
- Push lock bolt - 2 - back into initial position direction of - arrow -.
^ Shift rod lever - 1 - must now be able to move in direction of - arrow -.





Transmission as of approx. 04.2003:
- Rotate lock bracket - A - back into initial position direction of - arrow 2 -.
^ While doing this, lock bracket must be pressed in direction of - arrow 1 - out of transmission.





^ Selector shaft must now be able to move in direction of - arrow -.

All:
- Remove connecting pin T10027 out of shift mechanism.

Checking shift lever adjustment
^ Shift lever must rest in 3rd/4th shift gate when transmission is at idle.
- Operate clutch.
- Shift through all gears several times.
- Check function of reverse gear lock.
^ Shift lever must return by itself from reverse gear gate to 3rd/4th gear gate.

If un-smooth shifting occurs during repeated selection of a gear, shift adjustment must be repeated.
- Install shift lever cover.
- Screw shift knob on shift lever.
