Front flexible disc, removing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1331/
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1332/ Removing
Note:
^ Before removing, mark the positions of all parts in relation to each other. Re-install in the same position otherwise imbalance will be excessive, the bearings could be damaged causing rumbling noises.
^ Do not kink drive shaft.
^ Sealing ring in drive shaft flange - arrow - must not be damaged during removal and installation.
^ Replace drive shaft if damaged.
A twin pillar vehicle hoist should be used when working on drive shaft.
- Remove center sound insulation - arrows -.
Vehicles with 1 charge air cooler
Separate air guide hose - 2 - at air guide pipe.
Note: Ignore item - 1 - and - 3 -.
Continued for all vehicles
- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamp - arrows -.
- If present, remove exhaust system mounting components on subframe.
- Remove drive shaft tube from flexible disc at front of bevel box (only one of the three bolts is visible here - arrow -).
- Slide front drive shaft tube as far back as possible.
- Remove flexible disc from bevel gear transfer case flange - arrows -.
- Remove pendulum support from subframe - arrows A -.
- Carefully press engine/transmission forward.
- Carefully remove flexible disc.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:
Installation position of front flexible disc
^ The shield - arrow - faces toward drive shaft.
^ Three projecting sleeves each on transmission flange and on drive shaft flange grip into mounting holes of flexible disc.
Note:
^ Sealing ring in drive shaft flange - arrow - must not be damaged during removal and installation.
^ Replace drive shaft if damaged.
^ Slide front drive shaft tube on guide pin horizontally.
Torque specifications
Pendulum support to subframe (- A - arrows).
Install exhaust system free of tension.
