Steering Column, Removing and Installing



Steering column, removing and installing

Note:
^ New steering columns shipped as replacement part are secured with a transport lock. Remove this transport lock after installation of steering column.
^ It is recommended to keep the transport lock. It can be used for removing the steering column.
^ Always replace self-locking nuts and bolts.
^ Welding and straightening work on steering components is not permitted.





^ A bearing bushing and a shear bolt are supplied with each new steering column.
^ Insert the bearing bushing in the new steering column and tighten the shear bolt until the head shears off.

Removing
- Remove airbag module and steering wheel.
- Remove drivers side storage compartment.





- Remove bolts - 1 - and height adjustment handle.
- Remove bolts - 2, 3 and 4 -.
- Remove upper and lower parts of steering column trim.





- Disconnect connector - 1 -.
- Loosen bolt - 2 - on clamp until steering column switch can be removed.
- Disconnect turn signal and windshield wiper connectors, and set steering column switch aside.

CAUTION! Coil connector remains on steering column switch. Make sure that coil connector is not twisted out of center position when setting down steering column switch.

- Remove plastic nuts - 1 - and cover - A -.

Securing steering column before removing
A temporary fastener is required to stop the upper and lower parts of the steering column from pulling apart when they are detached from the steering gear.

If the upper and lower parts of the steering column are pulled too far apart or are pushed inside each other the splines will separate.

Rattling noises can occur when the vehicle is driven if the splines are not in their original installation position.

- Compress or extend steering column until the hole becomes visible.





- Insert a clip or similar fastener into the hole.





- Remove hex bolt - 1 -.
- Remove universal joint from steering gear.





- Remove nut - 1 - on central tube and remove hex bolt.
- Remove bolts - 2 -.
- Remove steering column.

When installing, note the following:





A bearing bushing and a shear bolt are supplied with each new steering column.

After installation of the steering column, the steering angle sensor G85 must be readjusted.

Note: Insert the bearing bushing in the new steering column and tighten the shear bolt until the head shears off.

- Insert steering column with bearing bushing into central tube - arrow A -.
- Push through hex bolt for bearing bushing from right side.
- Secure steering column with new bolts - 2 -.
- Tighten nut - 1 - to 9.5 Nm.
- Pull out transport lock - arrow B -.





- Push universal joint onto steering pinion and secure with new bolt - 1 -, to 30 Nm.
- Install universal joint cover/footrest.
- Connect connector for ignition/starter lock and immobilizer.

- Install steering column switch on steering lock housing.
- Install steering wheel with old bolt.
- Align steering column switch horizontally and adjust to dimension - a -. Then tighten clamping bolt - 3 -.
- Remove steering wheel again.
- Install upper and lower gap cover.
- Install upper and lower trim for steering column switch.
- Install drivers side storage compartment.
- Install steering wheel and airbag module.
