Safety Measures and Basic Info. For Troubleshooting and Repair
CAUTION:
^ ABS is basically maintenance free.
^ Testing, assembly and repair work should be conducted only by trained personnel.
Notes:
^ The ABS is a vehicle safety system; to work on it requires system knowledge.
^ Interruptions are indicated by the ABS warning light - K47 (right arrow) and the red brake warning symbol (left arrow).
Notes:
^ Red brake warning symbol appears in instrument cluster, which comes in two versions: Mid-Line and High-Line. In the Mid-Line version the warning symbol appears via the warning light for brake system - K118; in the High-Line version the symbol appears in the driver information system.
^ The red brake warning symbol can be activated by the ABS system, after the ignition is switched on and 10 km/h or 2000 RPM is attained one time.
^ If the warning lamp for ABS - K4 7 or the red brake warning symbol
^ To begin On Board Diagnostic (OBD) the vehicle must be at a standstill with the ignition switched on (with or without engine running). At a wheel speed greater than 2.75 km/h On Board Diagnostic is not possible. If a speed of 20 km/h is exceeded, On Board Diagnostic is discontinued.
Notes:
^ Make sure that vehicle electronics are not affected by electromagnetic influences during checking of ABS systems; this means keep vehicle away from tools with strong current consumption (e.g. an electric welding tool).Replace expensive components for the hydraulic unit only after a complete check.
^ If work is conducted on the hydraulic unit, electronic control module, speed sensors, or wiring harness, or components are changed (e.g. after an accident), the complete system must be checked.
^ Before working on the ABS switch off ignition and disconnect battery ground strap. For vehicles with coded radio, note code or ask for code.
Notes:
^ When working on the ABS extreme cleanliness is required. Clean connectors and the surrounding area before loosening. Do not use aggressive cleaning solutions, such as brake cleaner, fuel, thinner or mineral oil - containing solution (e.g. oils, grease).
^ Do not drive vehicle with connector removed from control module.
^ Make sure that brake fluid does not flow into connector.
^ Place parts that have been removed on a clean surface and cover. Use only lint free cloths.
^ When hydraulic lines are open, do not work with compressed air and move the vehicle only if necessary.
Notes:
^ Use only original packaged parts!
^ Only unwrap replacement parts from packaging just prior to installation.
^ Welding work done with an electrical welding toot could have a negative influence on the ABS system.
