Center Differential Housing, Transmission Installed

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Drip Tray (V.A.G 1306)

• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Removing

- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamps - arrows -.





• Flex joint in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°, otherwise it may be damaged.

• The exhaust system with the 3.0L V6 gasoline engine is shown in the illustration.

- Disengage rear part of exhaust system at retaining loops and remove.

• A second technician is needed to remove the rear section of the exhaust system.

- Remove the driveshaft heat shield - arrows -, where applicable.





- Remove exhaust system heat shield - 1 - below shift mechanism - arrows -.





- Remove bolts - arrows - on the transmission/driveshaft flange.





- Push driveshaft toward rear final drive. CV joints can be moved axially.

- Tie driveshaft up and toward the side to the heat shield - arrow -.





- Place Drip Tray (V.A.G 1306) underneath transmission.

- Drain gear oil.

- Carefully remove the bolts - arrows - and remove center differential housing - A -.





• Only 4 of the 6 bolts are shown in the illustration.

Center Differential Housing, Installing





Install in reverse sequence; note the following points:

- Install the new O-ring - arrow - and coat it with transmission oil.

- Position the small pressure spring - 2 - and center differential - 3 - on the pinion/hollow shaft - 1 -.





- Install the large pressure spring - 4 -.

- Position the center differential housing - 5 - on the transmission cover.

- Tighten the bolts - arrows -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 2) Bolt, 10 Nm plus an additional 45° turn ] Self-Locking Center Differential Assembly Overview.





• Only 4 of the 6 bolts are shown in the illustration.

- Clean threaded holes for driveshaft bolts of all locking compound residue. Cleaning can be performed with a thread tap.

- Top off transmission oil and check oil level. Refer to => [ Manual Transmission, Checking Gear Oil Level ] 02XA Transmission.

- Tighten the driveshaft on the transmission.

- Install the exhaust system and align it free-of-tension.
