Transmission, Removing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine support bridge (10-222 A)
• Pry lever (80-200)
• Transmission support (3282)
• Adjustment plate (3282/30)
• Engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A )
• Fender insert pads (T40045)
Work Procedure
- Place the selector lever in the "P" position.
CAUTION!
Observe the procedures for disconnecting the battery.
- Slide the cover over the battery to the right - arrow 1 - and pull it off upwards - arrow 2 -.
- With ignition switched off, disconnect Battery Ground (GND) wire - arrow -.
- Remove the engine cover bolts - arrows -.
- Pull off the sealing rubber at the bolted flanges of the fender.
- To prevent damage to the bolted flanges of the fender when using the engine support bridge (10-222 A), insert fender insert pads (T40045) on both sides between the bolted flange of the fender and the web plate lying beneath.
- Position the engine support bridge (10-222 A) onto the bolted flange of the fenders; the spindle stands at the ear.
- Expose the rear lifting eye on the engine.
- Connect the hook on the spindle with the lifting eye on the back of the engine.
- Take up some of the engine weight by tightening the spindle of the support bar, but do not lift.
- Remove both front wheels and tires.
- On vehicles equipped with an auxiliary heater, remove the bolts - arrows - for the exhaust pipe of the auxiliary heater to noise insulation.
- Remove the bolts or the quick release screws - 1 to 3 - and remove the noise insulation at the front and rear.
- Remove the noise insulation bracket - arrows -.
- Remove the vehicle floor plates at the inside left - 2 - and inside right - 1 -.
- Remove bolts - 1 through 4 - and remove the rear crossmember from the vehicle floor.
- Remove bolts - 1 through 6 - and remove the front crossmember from the vehicle floor.
• The flex joint in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10 degrees, otherwise it may be damaged.
- Remove the exhaust system double clamp nuts - arrows -.
- Remove the heat shield for the exhaust system.
- Place the plunger of the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A) and a block of wood - 1 - under the transmission.
- Support the tunnel crossmember using the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A).
CAUTION!
The lock carrier must be installed - danger of injury.
- First remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -, then bolts - 3 - and - 4 -.
- Slowly lower the tunnel crossmember using the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A).
- Remove nuts - arrows - and remove the tunnel crossmember.
- Remove the heat shield - 1 - for the right drive axle.
- Remove the drive axle from the transmission flange on the left and right sides.
- Remove the front exhaust pipe bracket - 1 -.
- Remove the bolts - arrows - for the front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter.
• The flex joint in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10 degrees, otherwise it may be damaged.
- Remove the front exhaust pipe.
• Observe the rules of cleanliness for working on transmissions. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.
- Place a oil drain pan under the transmission.
- Disconnect the union nuts - 1 - and - 2 - and disconnect the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) lines.
- Remove the bracket for the ATF lines - arrows -.
- Remove the auxiliary ATF filter from the transmission - arrows -.
- Loosen the union nuts - 1 - and - 2 - and disconnect the ATF lines.
- Remove the bracket for the ATF lines - arrows -.
- Remove bolt - arrow - and remove the ATF lines from the transmission.
- Disconnect the ATF lines.
Transmissions with Right Angled Connector
- Disengage the harness connector - A - in the direction of - arrow - and disconnect it from transmission.
- Free up the wiring harness.
Transmissions with Round Connector
- Disengage the electrical harness connector - 1 - and disconnect from the transmission.
- Move wiring harness clear - arrows -.
Continuation for All
- Remove the bracket - 3 - for the selector lever cable by first removing bolts - 2 -.
- Using the pry lever (80-200), pry the selector lever cable - A - from the lever for the selector shaft - arrow -.
- Remove bolts - 2 - and remove the transmission mount - 1 - from the transmission.
- Remove bolts - 1 to 5 - and - 11 - from the engine/transmission flange.
- Loosen bolt - 6 - only and then tighten by hand.
• Starter must not be removed.
- Mount the transmission support (3282) on the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A).
- Set the template (3282/30) onto the transmission support (3282) (template only installs in one position).
- Align the arms of the transmission support to correspond with the holes in the adjustment plate.
- Attach the support elements on the adjustment plate, as illustrated.
- Move the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A ) with transmission mount (3282) under the transmission and support the transmission.
• The arrow symbol on the adjusting plate points in direction of travel.
- Align the template parallel to the transmission and secure to the transmission using a M10 x 20 bolt - arrow -.
For Audi Cabriolet
• So that the 4 engine/transmission bolts at the bottom can be removed on the Audi Cabriolet, the following work steps must also be performed:
- Raise the transmission slightly using the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A).
- Remove the torque support fasteners - arrows -.
- Remove the left and right bolts - 1 - and swing the stabilizer bar - 2 - downward.
- Remove the nuts - 3 - at the engine mount on the left and right far enough until the lower edge of the nut is flush with threaded stud - arrow -.
- Raise the engine using the engine support bridge (10-222 A) far enough until both nuts - 3 - (on the left and right sides) make contact on the plate from below.
Continuation for All
- Remove bolts - 7 to 10 - at the engine/transmission flange.
Audi Cabriolet
- Lower the engine again.
- Lower the transmission again slowly.
Continuation for All
- Tie up the drive axles.
- Remove the last engine/transmission bolt.
- Press off the transmission from the bushings and let it down carefully.
