Front Final Drive Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine/transmission jack (VAG1383) with plate (VAG1359/2)
Removing
- Remove front exhaust system with catalytic converter. Refer to
- Remove heat shield for selector lever cable, if installed.
- Remove center differential. Refer to => [ Center Differential ] .
- Remove bolts (arrows) at intermediate flange for front final drive.
CAUTION!
• Slowly and carefully remove cover for front final drive/intermediate flange from transmission housing. The spur gears can otherwise fall out of the transmission.
• Do not reinstall spur gears that have fallen to the ground. The transmission must be swapped in this case.
- Lift off cover i.e. intermediate flange for front final drive.
• Do not remove spur gears for front final drive. Secure spur gears so they do not fall out.
• If the spur gears for front final drive were removed, the wheel marking must face outward (away from transmission) for re installation.
Installing
Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:
- Make sure centering sleeve - A - is correctly seated before installing.
- Install gasket
- Set on cover i.e. intermediate flange for front final drive.
• If installing the intermediate flange to the output shaft carelessly, the sealing lips of the sealing ring can be damaged.
Tightening sequence:
• 1. Stage: Tighten bolts - 1 - to - 3 - by hand
• When tightening bolts by hand, make sure the housing gap between cover and transmission housing decreases evenly around circumference.
• 2. Stage: Tighten bolts - 1 - to - 14 - in specified sequence to tightening torque
- Check ATF level and top off. Refer to => [ ATF Level, Checking ] .
- Install center differential. Refer to => [ Center Differential ] .
