Front Final Drive Gasket, Replacing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
Procedure
• General repair notes. Refer to => [ Repair Information ] Repair Information.
• Observe cleanliness rules when working on automatic transmissions. Refer to => [ Cleanliness Working Conditions ] Cleanliness Working Conditions.
- Remove the right front exhaust pipe.
- Remove the bolts - 1, 3 and 4 - and remove the selector lever cable heat shield - A -, if equipped.
• Bolt - 3 - attaches the heat shield, an exhaust system bracket and a mounting bracket to the transmission.
• Ignore - 2 -.
- Remove transfer case. Refer to => [ Transfer Case with Center Differential ] .
- Remove bolts - arrows - at intermediate flange for front final drive.
- Place Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with Universal Support ( V.A.G 1359/2) underneath.
CAUTION!
• Slowly and carefully remove intermediate flange from transmission housing. The spur gears can otherwise fall out of the transmission.
• Do not reinstall spur gears that have fallen to the ground. The transmission must be replaced in this case.
- Raise front final drive intermediate flange.
CAUTION!
• Do not remove front final drive spur pinions. Secure the spur pinions so they will not fall out.
• If front final drive spur pinions should be removed, installation location of intermediate pinion must be marked.
• The intermediate pinion is symmetrical but must be reinstalled in the same position to maintain running direction.
- Check whether centering sleeve - A - is inserted in intermediate flange for front final drive.
- Install new gasket.
• Apply thin coat of axle oil on sealing surface before installing gasket to avoid slipping of the gasket.
- Carefully place intermediate flange for front final drive.
CAUTION!
When installing the intermediate flange to the input shaft carelessly, the sealing lip of the shaft seal - arrow - can be damaged.
- Tighten the front final drive intermediate flange in 2 steps:
CAUTION!
When first tightening bolts - arrows - by hand, make sure the housing gap between intermediate flange for front final drive and transmission housing decreases evenly all around.
- Install transfer case => [ Transfer Case with Center Differential ] .
- Check and correct ATF level in planetary gearing => [ ATF Level In Planetary Gearing, Checking and Correcting ] ATF Level In Planetary Gearing, Checking and Correcting.
