Valvetrain Component Overview






Valvetrain Component Overview





1 65 Nm

Use counter-holder (3036) to loosen and tighten

2 Camshaft pulley for the exhaust camshaft

Note installation position: The thin rib of camshaft gear points outward and cylinder 1 TDC marking is visible => [ Install camshaft pulley. ] Exhaust Camshaft Seal

3 Exhaust camshaft sealing ring

Replacing, refer to => [ Exhaust Camshaft Seal ] Exhaust Camshaft Seal.

4 Cylinder Head

See note, refer to => [ Valvetrain ] Valvetrain

Check valve guides, refer to => [ Valve Guides, Checking ] Testing and Inspection

Rework valve seats, refer to => [ Valve Seats, Reworking ] Service and Repair

The sleeves for the bearing cover must fit inside the cylinder head

Seal contact surfaces with sealant before installing => [ Seal contact surfaces of double bearing cap/cylinder

5 Valve guide

Checking, refer to => [ Valve Guides, Checking ] Testing and Inspection

6 Valve stem seal

Replacing, refer to => [ Valve Stem Seals ] Service and Repair.

7 Valve spring

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Valve Stem Seals ] Service and Repair

8 Valve spring plate

9 Valve keys

10 Hydraulic valve lifter

Checking, refer to => [ Hydraulic Valve Lifter, Checking ] Testing and Inspection

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Valve Stem Seals ] Service and Repair

Do not interchange

Place on running surface when setting down

Before installing, check axial play in camshafts, refer to => [ Camshafts, Checking Axial Clearance ] Camshafts, Checking Axial Clearance

Lubricate contact surface

11 Intake camshaft

Check the radial play with Plastigage (valve lifter removed)

Radial clearance wear limit: 0.1 mm

Run-out: Max. 0.035 mm

Camshaft, removing and installing, refer to => [ Camshafts and Camshaft Adjuster ] Camshafts and Camshaft Adjuster

12 Intake camshaft bearing cover

Must be located on dowel sleeves

The sleeves must fit inside the cylinder head

Note installation position

Installation order => [ Tighten bearing covers 2 and 4 for the
intake and exhaust camshaft diagonally while paying close attention to the
dowel sleeves. ] Camshafts and Camshaft Adjuster

13 Double bearing cap

Must be located on dowel sleeves

The sleeves must fit inside the cylinder head

Before installing, lightly coat the sealing surfaces with sealant

14 Exhaust camshaft

Check the radial play with Plastigage (valve lifter removed)

Radial clearance wear limit: 0.1 mm

Run-out: max. 0.035 mm

15 Exhaust camshaft bearing cover

Must be located on dowel sleeves

The sleeves must fit inside the cylinder head

Note installation position

Installation order => [ Tighten bearing covers 2 and 4 for the
intake and exhaust camshaft diagonally while paying close attention to the
dowel sleeves. ] Camshafts and Camshaft Adjuster

16 10 Nm

17 10 Nm

18 Drive chain

Check for wear

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Camshafts and Camshaft Adjuster ] Camshafts and Camshaft Adjuster

If the old drive chain is going to be used again, mark the installation position before removing it => [ If re-using the old drive chain: ] Camshafts and Camshaft Adjuster

19 Camshaft adjuster

With camshaft adjustment valve 1 (N205)

Before removing, secure with chain tensioner retainer (3366)

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Camshafts and Camshaft Adjuster ] Camshafts and Camshaft Adjuster

Seal contact surfaces of camshaft adjuster/cylinder head => [ Seal contact surfaces of camshaft adjuster/cylinder

Check the camshaft adjustment in "Guided Fault Finding".

20 Rubber/metal seal

Coat with sealant before installing => [ Replace the camshaft adjuster bonded rubber
seal and lightly coat the with sealant. ] Camshafts and Camshaft Adjuster

21 Gasket

Replace

22 Exhaust valve

With sodium filling

Always observe the instructions for disposing of sodium filled valves, refer to => [ Valve Dimensions ] [1][2]Specifications

Do not rework, only lapping is permitted

Rework valve seats, refer to => [ Valve Seats, Reworking ] Service and Repair

23 Intake valve

Do not rework, only lapping is permitted

Rework valve seats, refer to => [ Valve Seats, Reworking ] Service and Repair

24 Intake camshaft sealing ring

Replacing, refer to => [ Intake Camshaft Sealing Ring ] Intake Camshaft Sealing Ring.

25 Cover for Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor

Note installation position: Insert the tab into the notch in the camshaft

26 Washer

With taper

Note installation position

27 25 Nm

28 Camshaft position sensor (G40) housing

29 10 Nm
