Subframe Bushing



Subframe bushings, replacing

Note:
^ There are different subframe versions.

^ Subframe with bonded rubber bushings in subframe/body mountings (all vehicles except convertible). Bonded rubber bushings can be replaced.

^ Subframe with welded steel bushings instead of bonded rubber bushings in subframe/body mountings (Convertible models only). Steel bushings cannot be replaced, replace subframe when damaged.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Assembly device 3291
^ Puller 3351/1
^ Puller 3351/4
^ Installation device 3372
^ Installation device 3372/1
^ Installation device 3372/2
^ Thrust pad 30 - 205

Subframe must be removed in order to replace subframe bushings.





Removing bonded rubber bushing
- Saw or cut off rubber bead on subframe bushing as far as outer edge.

Note:
^ Apply corrosion protection if paint surface on subframe is damaged.





Removing rear bonded rubber bushing
Make sure installation tool 3372 is properly seated and cannot tilt out of position.





Removing bonded rubber bushing
All bonded rubber bushings on subframe are removed using the same special tool.





Preparation for installing subframe bushing
- Apply installation tool 3372 and insert 3372/2 split bushings.





Align bonded rubber bushings
The bonded rubber bushings must be aligned using a long square-section tube or a straightedge.

A = 90° ± 5°

Clamp subframe in vise only with protective pads!





Installing rear bonded rubber bushing
Use lubricating oil G 294 421 A1 when pressing in bonded rubber bushings.
- Pull in bushing - A - until thrust piece - 3372/1 - is flush with upper edge of removal tool - 3372 -.
- Lift off removal tool - 3372 - and two shell sections - 3372/2 -.





Installing rear bonded rubber bush
- Insert two shell sections -3372/2- between bridge piece - 3351/4 - and subframe.
- Pull in bush as far as the stop.

Apply corrosion protection if paint surface on subframe is damaged.





Installing front bonded rubber bush
Use lubricating oil G 294 421 A1 when pressing in bonded rubber bushes.
- Insert 3372/2 split bushings in - 3372 -.
- Pull in bushing - A - until 3372/1 is flush with upper edge of removal tool - 3372 -.





Installing front bonded rubber bush
- Raise installation tool 3372 and take out shell sections - 3372/2 -.
- Replace bridge piece - 3351/4 - with thrust piece - 3351/1 - and then pull in bushing until they stop.

Apply corrosion protection if paint surface on subframe is damaged.
