General Information

CAUTION:
Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
- Switch off all electrical consumers.
- Switch the ignition off and remove ignition key.
- Disconnect negative (-) battery terminal.
- When disconnecting and reconnecting battery terminals, observe all applicable Notes and torque specifications, as well as instructions on performing OBD program and electrical system function checks as specified

Multi-function steering wheel installed as optional equipment.

Function buttons are integrated into the steering wheel to facilitate operation of the radio, radio-navigation, telephone and CD changer while driving.

The electronics integrated into the steering wheel are responsible for transferring the button signals on to LIN data Bus (single-wire Bus) and for dimming the function buttons. Two additional buttons for Tiptronic shift functions may be fitted on vehicles with automatic transmission.

Only the individual button modules and tiptronic buttons can be serviced.

The electronics in the steering wheel cannot be replaced separately. In the event of a malfunction, the entire steering wheel must be replaced.

Should the switch electronics integrated with the airbag malfunction, the complete airbag module must be replaced.

The multi-function steering wheel is integrated with systems controlled by Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module J527 and communicates with J527 via the LIN Data Bus.

Before troubleshooting or servicing, technicians must be familiar with the functions and operation specifics of the applicable standard or optional radio system and telephone system as related to multi-function steering wheel operation. Always read the applicable owners manuals and review all system functions.
