Shift Mechanism, Removing and Installing

Shift mechanism, removing and installing, 02M/02Y, 5 & 6 Speed M/T, AWD





Removing
- Remove left front cover - arrows -.





Vehicles with 4 cylinders Engine:
- Remove air guide hose from Throttle Valve Control Module J338, to do so remove hose clamp - 4 -.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector at Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor G70 - item 1 -.
- Disconnect hose - 5 - from air filter housing if installed.
- Remove bolts - 2 - and - 3 -.
- Remove air filter housing.





Vehicles with 6 cylinders Engine:
- Disconnect air guide hose - 2 - at Throttle Valve Control Module J338.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector at Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor G70 - item 3 -.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 4 -.
- Expose electrical wire - arrow -.
- Remove air filter housing.





- Unscrew cable mounting bracket on transmission - arrows -.

Vehicles up to 06.2001:





- Disengage cable locking mechanism for shift and selector cable, to do so, press casing in direction of - arrow 1 - to stop and engage by turning left in direction of - arrow 2 -.
- Pull cables out of cable locking mechanism.





Vehicles as of 07.2001:
- Unclip locking washer - 1 - from shift lever cable and locking washer - 2 - from selector lever cable.
- Remove cable locking mechanism with cables from shift rod lever and linkage lever.





All:
- Remove shift knob - 1 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 -.
- Remove retaining ring - 3 - and cover - 4 - upward.





- Lift up switch console - 1 - upward and disconnect electrical harness connectors - 2 -.
- Carefully press retaining tabs - 3 - toward front and compartment upward - 4 -.





- Remove front securing nuts - arrows - for shift mechanism housing.





- Remove front securing nuts - arrows - for shift mechanism housing.
- Disconnect exhaust system behind front exhaust pipe and remove catalytic converter (second mechanic).
- Remove driveshaft.
- Remove front heat shield.
- Swing shift mechanism housing downward and remove together with shift cables.





Installing
Installation is performed in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Bolt in cable mounting bracket - arrows -.
- Align shift mechanism housing parallel to body.

Vehicles up to 06.2001:
- Insert cables into disengaged cable locking mechanism.





Vehicles as of 07.2001:
- Clip locking washer - 1 - onto shift lever cable and locking washer - 2 - onto selector lever cable.

All:
- Install driveshaft.
- Install exhaust system tension-free.
- Adjust shift mechanism.
