Rear Final Drive, Removing



Rear final drive, removing





Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Engine/Transmission Jack V.A.G 1383/A
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1332/
^ Triple square socket driver T10035





- Remove right rear fuel tank cover - arrows -.
- Remove rear section of exhaust system.





- Remove heat shield from vehicle floor beneath luggage compartment - arrows -.





- Check whether a factory marking - arrows - is on the flexible disc and Haldex clutch flange. If not, mark parts in relation to each other.





- Remove rear drive shaft tube with flexible disc and vibration dampener from rear final drive - arrows -.
- Remove right drive axle and tie securely between upper and lower lateral control arms.
- Remove left drive axle and tie securely at lower lateral control arm.





- Remove securing bolts - A - and - B - of front mounting bracket / final drive.
- Remove front mounting bracket bolts - C - on subframe using Socket T10035 and remove mounting bracket.





- Place engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383/A with universal support 1359/2 only under final drive and secure final drive.
- Remove right and left subframe securing bolts (- arrow A -).
- Then remove rear final drive right mounting bracket right and left mounting bolts (- arrow B -).

Note: Illustration shows only one of the two securing bolts.

- Disconnect Haldex clutch connector - arrow C -.





- Pull breather pipe at right and left off carrier - arrow -.

Note: Illustration shows only left breather pipe.

- Lower final drive slightly and carefully pull out of subframe using engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383/A.
- Lower final drive.





- If final drive is to be replaced or is to be clamped in assembly stand, it must be removed from mounting bracket - A -.





- If final drive must be replaced, left breather pipe - A - (400 mm long) and right breather pipe - B - (300 mm long) must be altered.
