Removal and Replacement

Torque converter, installing, 09G, 6 Speed A/T

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Depth gauge

- Push torque converter hub through sealing ring onto transmission shaft as far as first stop.
- Press torque converter by hand into torque converter bell housing, while rotating it so that torque converter hub engages in recesses of inner wheel of ATF pump. Torque converter must be felt to slide in.

The torque converter is installed correctly if dimension -a- between the transmission housing mounting flange and the contact surface of the torque converter stud is:

-a- = 22 mm

Please ensure during subsequent assembly work that dimension -a- remains unchanged. The torque converter must not slip forward.

CAUTION! If the torque converter is not installed correctly, the torque converter drive plate or the ATF pump will be seriously damaged when the transmission is joined to the engine.

When subsequently installing the transmission, note in particular the following point.

CAUTION! Before and during tightening of bolts on engine/transmission flange, continually check that the torque converter behind the drive plate can be turned. If the converter cannot be turned, it must be assumed that it has not been installed correctly and the drive plate of the converter or the ATF pump will be damaged during final tightening of bolted connections.
