Transmission, Removing
Transmission, removing, 09G, 6 Speed A/T
Note: All cable ties which are released or cut open when removing the transmission must be located in the same position when installing the transmission.
- Loosen bolts (arrows) and remove cover from engine.
- Remove battery cover (arrows).
- Refer to coding on vehicles with encoded radio/radio navigation system (RNS); obtain if necessary.
Note: Before disconnecting the battery observe the necessary measures.
- Disconnect Ground strap (arrow) at battery with ignition switched off.
- Loosen clamp - 4 - and disconnect intake hose and connector - 1 - from Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
- If present, disconnect hose - 5 - from air cleaner housing.
- Unscrew bolts - 2 - and - 3 -, then remove entire air cleaner housing.
- Remove battery and battery bracket (arrows).
- Shift selector lever to "N".
- Use screwdriver to press selector lever cable - 1 - off lever/selector shaft - 6 -.
Note: Do not loosen bolt - 2 -.
- Unscrew two bolts - 3 -.
- Release selector lever cable from transmission at clip - 4 - and suspend.
Note: Do not kink selector lever cable.
- Disconnect connector - 5 - at multi-function switch.
- Disconnect electrical connections at starter.
- Remove starter -C-:
Note: The starter cable does not need to be disconnected. The starter must be secured above or to one side.
- Clamp off hoses of ATF cooler with 3094 and disconnect from ATF cooler.
- Close off ATF cooler with clean plugs.
- Install support bar 10-222A together with supports 10-222 A/1.
- Install support bar at wheel housing plate (arrows).
- If hose and cable connections are located in area of engine lifting eyes for support bar 10-222A, they must now be removed.
- Secure hook of spindle at engine lifting eye with shackle 10-222 A/12.
- Slightly pre-tension engine/transmission assembly via spindle.
- Remove Ground connection (arrow) at upper engine/transmission connecting bolt.
- Remove all engine/transmission connecting bolts which are accessible from above.
- Remove sound insulation tray (arrows).
- Remove left drive shaft completely:
Note:
^ There is no separate flange shaft in the transmission; the drive shaft is installed in the transmission.
^ Always use the special tool described to pry the drive shaft out of the transmission. Removing with other tools, e.g. screwdrivers or mounting bars, would damage the transmission and/or the drive shaft and they would have to be replaced.
- Remove both front wheels.
- If installed, remove headlight range control bracket on left in wheel housing (arrows) and secure upward and to one side.
- Remove left sound insulation (arrows).
Vehicles with power steering line at tubular cross member:
- Disconnect power steering line at tubular cross member (arrows).
Vehicles with power steering line at transmission:
- Disconnect power steering line at transmission and remove speed nut from transmission.
- If installed, remove front tubular crossmember (arrows).
- If installed, disconnect cross brace at subframe (arrows).
- Unscrew pendulum support (arrows).
- Press out right ball joint.
Note:
^ This operational step is necessary so that the right drive shaft does not have to be disconnected from the wheel bearing (wheel hub).
^ The right drive shaft only needs to be disconnected from the transmission.
- Remove both bolts -B- and remove heat shield -A-.
- Disconnect right drive shaft -C- from transmission in direction of arrow (arrow):
- Position right drive shaft -A- up high and secure (tie up).
- Unclip cap of converter nut cover -C-.
- Unscrew six nuts (arrow) from torque converter. Turn crankshaft 60° each time.
Note: If all 6 nuts are not unscrewed from the torque converter, the torque converter will be pulled out when the transmission is disconnected from the engine.
- Disconnect exhaust system at clamping sleeve (arrows).
- Push clamping sleeve toward rear.
- Suspend exhaust system by means of a chain. Engage hook 3004 in apertures in vehicle floor for this purpose (remove plugs if necessary).
Note: The isolating element in exhaust system must not be bent more than 10° to avoid damage.
- Disconnect both connectors -A- and -B- from transmission.
Note: If connectors -A- or -B-, which are screwed to the transmission, are damaged or destroyed during removal or in an accident, the corresponding wiring harness and 14-pin or 8-pin connector must be replaced.
- Remove transmission console -A- (unscrew bolts - 1 - and - 2 -).
- Lower engine/transmission unit down approx. 50 mm using spindle.
Transmission support 3282 is set up with the adjustment plate 3282/36 to remove the 6-speed automatic transmission 09G.
- Align arms of transmission support according to holes in adjustment plate.
- Bolt on support elements as illustrated on adjustment plate 3282/36.
- Place transmission jack under vehicle. Arrow symbol on adjustment plate points to front of vehicle.
- Align adjustment plate parallel to transmission.
- Secure transmission to transmission support 3282 with bolt -A-.
- Support transmission by raising transmission support from below.
- Remove lower rear engine/transmission connecting bolt -B-.
- Remove remaining engine/transmission connecting bolts.
- Press transmission off engine, pressing torque converter out of drive plate.
- Press torque converter against ATF pump (arrow).
- Carefully turn transmission toward subframe.
- Carefully lower transmission and guide down past subframe.
- When lowering, change position of transmission via transmission support 3282.
- Secure torque converter to prevent it from falling out.
