ATF Level, Checking
ATF level, checking, 09G, 6 Speed A/T
Special tools and equipment
^ Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051
^ Drip tray V.A.G 1306
^ Filler system V.A.G 1924
^ Protective goggles
Requirements
^ Transmission not in emergency running mode.
^ Vehicle must be level (horizontal)
^ Selector lever at position "P", engine idling.
^ Air conditioner and heating system must be switched off.
^ Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 connected, "Vehicle self-diagnosis and vehicle system "02 - transmission electronics" selected.
^ The ATF temperature at the beginning of the test must not be higher than 30°C. If necessary, first allow the transmission to cool.
Note:
^ The ATF temperature is read from the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
^ The ATF level will vary according to the temperature of the ATF.
^ If the ATF level is checked when the ATF temperature is too low, this will result in overfilling.
^ If the level is checked when the ATF temperature is too high, this will result in underfilling.
^ Both overfilling and underfilling have a detrimental effect on the functioning of the transmission.
^ Only the ATF available as a replacement part may be used in the automatic transmission 09G. Other oils cause faults and/or breakdown of the transmission.
^ The ATF temperature is read from the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
Reading ATF temperature
Display on VAS 5051
- Under - 1 - select diagnostic function "08 - Read measured value block".
Display on VAS 5051:
1 - Enter display group (max. input value = 255)
- Enter "6" for "display group number 6" in zone - 2 - and confirm entry by pressing Q key.
Display on VAS 5051
- Read ATF temperature in display zone - 1 -.
Checking and correcting ATF level
Note:
^ The ATF level is checked at the ATF inspection plug.
^ The ATF level is correct if at an ATF temperature between 35° and 45°) there is still a slight leakage of fluid at the ATF inspection plug (caused by the rise in fluid level due to heating).
1) 50°C for tropical countries
- Fill ATF filler system V.A.G 1924 with ATF for automatic transmission 09G.
ATF filler system must be clean and ATF must not be mixed with other ATFs!
- Mount reservoir of ATF filler system V.A.G 1924 as high as possible on vehicle.
- Drive vehicle onto a four column lifting platform or over an assembly pit in order for it to be absolutely horizontal.
- Place drip tray V.A.G 1306 underneath transmission.
WARNING!
^ When working close to the radiator, always maintain a certain distance from the fan - danger of injury!
^ Fan may switch on automatically.
- Start engine and run at idling speed.
WARNING! Wear protective goggles.
- When an ATF temperature of 35°C is reached, unscrew ATF inspection plug -A-.
- Always replace seal (arrow) for ATF inspection plug.
ATF present in overflow pipe runs out first (arrow - 2 -).
If ATF emerges via overflow pipe from ATF inspection aperture before ATF has reached 40°C, ATF level is OK.
- Tighten ATF inspection plug (arrow - 1 -) with new seal to 27 Nm. ATF check is now complete.
Note: The ATF inspection plug must be screwed in again before the ATF reaches a temperature of 45°C). 1) 50°C for tropical countries
If no ATF emerges from ATF inspection aperture by the time ATF has reached 45°C, top off ATF
- Exit function "08 - Read measured value block" by pressing * key.
- Press "06 - End output".
- Switch off ignition and disconnect Data Link Connector (DLC).
Filling ATF
If no ATF emerges via overflow pipe (arrow - 2 -) at ATF inspection aperture by the time ATF has reached 40°C, ATF must be topped off.
Note: The ATF inspection plug must at the latest be resealed on reaching a temperature of 45°C). Switch engine off if necessary, allow transmission to cool down and repeat the test.
1) 50°C for tropical countries
- Remove sound insulation tray (arrows).
- Remove filler plug (Torx socket head T55) (arrow).
Note: The filler plug seal (arrow) must always be replaced.
- Hang hook of filler system V.A.G 1924 in aperture of filler plug (arrow).
Note: An insufficient ATF filling as well as filling to excess affects the function of the transmission.
- Using V.A.G 1924 fill with ATF until at between 35°C and 45°C ATF emerges via overflow pipe (arrow - 2 -) from inspection aperture.
- Tighten ATF inspection plug (arrow - 1 -) with new seal to 27 Nm. ATF check is now complete.
Note: The inspection plug must at the latest be resealed on reaching a temperature of 45°C). If necessary, allow transmission to cool down and repeat the test.
1) 50°C for tropical countries
- Tighten filler plug (arrow) with new seal to 39.5 Nm.
- Exit function "08 - Read measured value block" by pressing * key.
- Press "06 - End output".
- Install sound insulation tray (arrows).
- Switch off ignition and disconnect Data Link Connector (DLC).
