Rear Gas-Filled Struts, Emptying

Rear gas-filled struts, emptying

A - Emptying by drilling

- Clamp gas-filled strut vertically in vise, with piston rod pointing downward.

CAUTION! Always wear eye protection when performing this procedure.

- Drill a 3 mm diameter hole - arrow A - through outer tube of strut.

Note: Gas will escape while drilling.

- Continue drilling until inner tube is penetrated (approx. 25 mm deep).
- Drill a second 6 mm diameter hole - arrow B - through outer and inner tubes of strut.
- Hold strut over an appropriate container for catching oil and move piston rod up and down several times through entire stroke until no more oil comes out.

B - Opening strut with a pipe cutter

CAUTION! Always wear eye protection when performing this procedure.

- Drill a 3 mm diameter hole - arrow - through outer tube of strut, or saw through side of tube.

Note: Gas will escape while drilling or sawing.

- Apply pipe cutter (e.g. 150/3 Stahlwille Express) as shown in illustration and cut through outer tube.
- Pull piston rod upward, at the same time holding the inner tube securely with pliers and pressing it downward, so that it remains in the outer tube when the piston rod is pulled up slowly.
- Remove piston rod from inner tube.
- Drain shock absorber tube.
