Front Suspension



Ball joint, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required





^ Ball joint puller 3287 A
^ Ball joint puller Kukko 129/0





^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1332, measuring range 40 to 200 Nm

Removing

All vehicles
- Remove wheel.
- Mark positions of nuts.





- Remove lower nuts from ball joint.





- Remove upper nut from ball joint.

Roadster TT VR6 only:
- Detach control arm from ball joint.





- Apply ball joint puller Kukko 129/0 as shown in the illustration and press out ball joint.

Note:
^ Use the ball joint puller specified here and make sure it is seated correctly, otherwise the sleeve in the wheel bearing housing will be pulled out together with the ball joint.
^ Leave nut on a few turns to protect ball joint threads.

All other vehicles:





- Attach ball joint puller as shown in the illustration and press out ball joint.

Note: Leave nut on a few turns to protect ball joint threads.

Installing








- Bolt on ball joint to control arm (align nuts to markings).

Note: Commercially available ring insertion tools (18 mm), e.g. Stahlwille 732/10 or Hazet 6630c-18, can be used instead of V.A.G 1332/10

1 - Internal Torx T40
- Insert ball joint into wheel bearing housing.





- Install new self-locking nut, and counterhold with Internal Torx T40.

Note: Make sure that the boot is not damaged or twisted.

- Align vehicle.
