Drive Axle Assembly Overview
1 Clamp
• Always replace.
• Installing the clamp, refer to => [ Install the clamp. ] Drive Axle With Peened Triple Roller Joint AAR 3300 i.
• Depending on the type, tension with hose clamp pliers (VAG 1275). Refer to => [ Depending on the type, tension the small
and large clamp using the ] Drive Axle With Peened Triple Roller Joint AAR 3300 i.
• Depending on the type, tension with pliers (3340). Refer to => [ Depending on the type, tension the small
and large clamp using the. ] Drive Axle With Peened Triple Roller Joint AAR 3300 i.
2 Inner Constant Velocity (CV) Joint Boot
• CV joint boot must fit in the groove and on the CV joint contour.
• Before tightening the clamp, briefly raise the CV joint boot to allow pressure to equalize.
3 Clamp
• Always replace.
• Tensioning, refer to => [ Depending on the type, tension the small and large clamp using the ] Drive Axle With Peened Triple Roller Joint AAR 3300 i.
4 Securing Ring
• Always replace.
• Insert before mounting in ring groove (not visible with joint installed).
• Before installing the CV joint, align the sealing ring in the center with the opening facing upward.
5 Outer Constant Velocity (CV) Joint
• Replace only as complete unit
• Removing, refer to => [ Drive Axle with 100 mm Outer Constant Velocity Joint ] Drive Axle With 100 mm Outer Constant Velocity Joint.
• Checking, refer to => [ Outer Constant Velocity Joint ] Outer Constant Velocity Joint.
• Installing, refer to => [ Outer CV Joint, Installing ] Drive Axle With 100 mm Outer Constant Velocity Joint.
• When installing the CV joint onto the axle shaft, the splines on the axle shaft must be lightly lubricated with the same grease used in the CV joint.
6 Bolt
• Always replace.
Observe the assembly notes when removing, refer to => [ Drive Axle ] Drive Axle.

• Tightening specification, refer to => [ Installing ] Drive Axle.
7 Clamp
• Always replace.
• Tensioning, refer to => [ Tighten the Small and Large
Clamps on the Outer CV Joint. ] Drive Axle With 100 mm Outer Constant Velocity Joint.
8 Outer Constant Velocity CV Joint Boot
• Check for tears and scuffing.
• Before tightening the clamp, briefly raise the CV joint boot to allow pressure to equalize.
9 Clamp
• Always replace.
• Tensioning, refer to => [ Tighten the Small and Large
Clamps on the Outer CV Joint. ] Drive Axle With 100 mm Outer Constant Velocity Joint.
10 Axle Shaft
• Drive axle removing and installing => [ Drive Axle ] Drive Axle.
11 Securing Ring
12 Triple Roller Star
The chamfer - arrow - points to the axle shaft splines.
• When installing triple roller star on axle shaft, splines on axle shaft must be lightly coated with grease used in joint.
13 Securing Ring
• Always replace.
• Insert in the axle shaft groove.
14 Bolt, 70 Nm
• Always replace.
• Pre-tighten to 10 Nm in diagonal sequence.
15 Joint Piece
Grease Quantity and Type
Re-grease the CV joint when replacing the CV boot.
Fill the joints with grease.
• Note that the inner and outer CV joints use different types of grease.
