Shift Cable: Testing and Inspection
Selector lever cable, checking and adjusting, 09E, 6 Speed A/T
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Pry lever 80-200
Checking
- Shift selector lever into "P" position.
- Activate the vehicle jack mode.
Note:
^ Before raising the vehicle on a hoist (wheels off the ground), first activate the vehicle jack mode.
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove cover plate from selector shaft lever.
- Pry off selector lever cable - 1 - from selector shaft lever - 3 - e.g. using pry lever RMV outside mirror 80-200.
Note:
^ Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
- Shift selector lever from "P" to "S".
- Check front protective sleeve on selector lever cable for damage, if necessary replace cable.
^ Shift mechanism and selector lever cable must move freely. If necessary, replace selector lever cable.
- Remove selector lever handle.
- Shift selector lever in position "N".
- Remove front ashtray.
- Remove center console cover.
- Remove harness connector - 1 - out of protective sleeve - 2 -.
- Separate harness connector - 1 - for circuit board.
- Separate harness connector - 3 - for Shift Lock Solenoid N110.
Note:
^ The connector - 3 - is also covered by a protective sleeve.
- Carefully release retaining tabs - arrows - one after the other to remove cover from shift mechanism.
- Pull cover slightly upward until cover guides - 1 - are outside of holes - 2 - on shift mechanism.
- Lift rear of cover upward in direction of - arrow - and at the same time pull it over the center console crossmember - 3 -.
- Shift selector lever in position "P".
- Shift the lever/switch rod at the transmission in "P" position. Catch must engage in parking lock gear, both front wheels are locked (cannot be turned together in one direction).
Note:
^ To ensure that selector shaft lever is in position "D", shift the selector shaft lever on transmission forward until stop in position "P". Then shift lever toward the rear (against the direction of travel) again three shift positions.
^ It must be possible to press selector lever cable on to lever/shift rod.
- If necessary, loosen the bolt for selector lever cable clamp using socket insert Torx 25, press on the selector lever cable and retighten the clamp bolt.
Adjusting
- Shift selector lever in position "D".
- Loosen bolt for selector lever cable clamp with socket insert Torx 25.
Note:
^ Loosen clamp bolt approximately 1 turn, do not remove.
^ With clamp bolt loosened, selector lever must remain in position "D", otherwise adjustment will be incorrect.
- Carefully move selector lever lightly forward and backward without shifting to a different selector lever position.
- Tighten bolt for selector lever cable clamp with socket insert Torx 25 (13 Nm).
Note:
^ Do not pull selector lever back or forward while adjusting, otherwise adjustment will be incorrect.
- Guide cover over selector lever - 4 - and at the same time under center console crossmember - 3 - at front.
- Swivel cover downward at rear in direction of - arrow -.
- Insert cover guides - 1 - into holes - 2 - of shift mechanism.
- Push down on cover until retainer tabs - arrows - clip into place.
- Connect harness connector - 3 - for Shift Lock Solenoid N110.
- Push harness connector - 3 - into protective sleeve (not illustrated).
- Connect harness connector - 1 - for circuit board.
- Push harness connector - 1 - out of protective sleeve - 2 -.
- Install front ashtray and center console cover.
- Install selector lever handle.
- Check shift mechanism
