Brake pads, removing and installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1410
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1332
^ Brake pedal actuator V.A.G 1869/2
^ Piston resetting tool T10145
Removing
Note: Mark brake pads when removing them if they are to be reused. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
- Remove wheels.
- On vehicles equipped with a brake pad wear indicator, disconnect connector - 1 -
- Lift locating lug slightly on lower part of connector - 2 - and turn 90°.
- Pull connector lower part out of bracket.
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove wheels.
- Remove securing bolts from brake caliper housing, when doing this counter-hold on guide pins.
- Swing brake caliper housing upward and remove brake pads.
- Press piston back.
Note: Press piston back into the cylinder with resetting tool, before inserting new brake pads. Before pressing the piston back, draw off brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle. Otherwise, fluid can overflow and cause damage, particularly if reservoir has been topped off.
CAUTION: Brake fluid is poisonous and must on no account be siphoned by mouth through a hose.
Installing
Use methylated spirits to clean brake caliper housing.
- Install brake pads.
- Swing brake caliper housing down and tighten securing bolt to 30 Nm.
Note:
^ The repair kit includes four self-locking hex bolts which must be installed.
^ After each brake pad change firmly depress brake pedal several times with vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
- Installing wheels
- Check brake fluid level and top off if necessary.
