Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- And Checking Activation
Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G. 1526 A
- V.A.G. 1527 B
- V.A.G. 1594 A
- V.A.G. 1598/31
- Perform Output check diagnosis and activate Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-. Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), (Function 03)
- Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -1- (under cover, left at bulkhead) must operate and Secondary Air Injection Pump Motor - V101- must run in intervals. The relay -2- in this instance does not need to be monitored (it is in regards to the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) Power Supply Relay -J271-).
A If relay does not operate:
- Check activation of secondary air injection pump relay -J299-
- Check voltage supply for secondary air injection pump relay -J299-
B If relay operates, but Secondary Air Injection Pump Motor -V101- does not run:
- Check voltage supply for secondary air injection pump motor - V101-
Voltage supply for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-
- Turn off ignition.
- Remove Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -1-.
- Connect multimeter to following location (left relay carrier) to read voltage:
Relay carrier under the cover on left Measure to
splash wall
Terminal
1 Engine Ground (GND)
NOTE: The relay locations are specified on the relay carrier.
- Specification: Battery Voltage
If specified value is not obtained:
- Perform following tests, specified by below:
- Check Fuse S131 (50A) in Main Fuse box/Battery
- Check wire connection from Battery + (socket 30) to Fuse S131 to Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- (under cover, left at bulkhead) for open circuit.
- Connect multimeter to following location (left relay carrier) to read voltage:
Relay carrier under the cover on left Measure to
splash wall
3 Engine Ground (GND)
- Briefly operate starter (motor can start).
- Specification: Battery Voltage
If specified value is not obtained:
- Perform following test, specified by below:
- Check Fuse S243 (in fuse holder, socket location 43).
- Check wire connection from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- (under cover, left at bulkhead) over Fuse S243 (in fuse holder, socket location 43) to Fuel Pump Relay for open circuit.
Checking activation of secondary air injection (AIR) pump
- Turn ignition off.
- Remove secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay.
- Connect multimeter to following location (left relay carrier) to read voltage:
Relay carrier under the cover on left Measure to
splash wall
Terminal
4 Battery Positive (B+)
- Perform the Output check diagnosis and activate the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), (Function 03)
- Specification: Battery voltage varying; because relay is turned on and off by ECM during output check diagnosis.
If specified value is not obtained:
- Turn ignition off.
- Connect Test box V.A.G. 1598/31 to engine control module (ECM) harness. Do not connect ECM. Electrical Testing Using VAG1598/31 Test Box
- Check the following wiring connections for open circuit or short to ground (GND) and/or battery voltage (B+):
Relay carrier under the cover on left VAG1598/31 test box
splash wall Terminal Socket
4 66
- If necessary, repair open or short circuits.
If no problems are found:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-.
Checking Voltage supply for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101-
- Remove sound dampening (arrow).
- Remove connector from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101- -1-.
- Connect the voltage tester V.A.G. 1527 B between 1 and 2.
- Perform the Output check diagnosis and activate the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-. Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), (Function 03)
- The LED must flash
If the LED does not flash:
- Perform the following tests, indicated below:
- Check wiring harness from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101- connector to Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- (under cover, left at bulkhead) for open circuit:
IMPORTANT: Check wiring harness from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101- to Ground (GND) location in left of engine compartment for open circuit.
If no problem is found:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101-.
