Oil Pan: Service and Repair


Oil Pan, removing and installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Electric drill with plastic brush attachment
- Silicone sealant D 176 404 A2

Removing






- Remove center noise insulation panel - arrows -.
- Drain engine oil.






- Unbolt oil return line - 3 - from oil pan.
- Unscrew oil pan.

Note: Use special tool 3185 to loosen and tighten oil pan screws. Unscrew using 3249 hex ball socket.

- Remove oil pan (if necessary, loosen pan by lightly tapping with rubber mallet).

- Remove sealant remaining on cylinder block with flat scraper.






- Remove remaining sealant from oil pan (with rotating plastic brush or similar).

WARNING: Wear eye protection.

- Clean sealing surfaces: they must be free of oil and grease.

Installing

Note: The oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant D176 404 A2.






- Cut off nozzle on tube at front marking (nozzle diameter approximately 3 mm).
- Thickness of sealant bead: 2 - 3 mm

Note: The bead of sealant must not be thicker than 3 mm, otherwise excess sealant will enter the oil pan and obstruct the strainer in the oil intake pipe.






- Apply silicone sealant to the clean sealing surface on the oil pan as illustrated. The illustration shows the position of the sealant bead on the cylinder block.
- Apply the sealant bead with particular care around the rear sealing flange - arrows -.
- Fit the oil pan immediately and bolt to cylinder block. Start by tightening all the bolts by hand.
- Tighten the 3 bolts securing oil pan to gearbox.
- Tighten bolts securing oil pan to cylinder block in two stages in diagonal sequence.






- Reattach oil return line - 3 - at oil pan.
Tightening torques
Component Torque
Oil pan to cylinder block 15 Nm
Oil pan to transmission 45 Nm
Oil return line to oil pan 15 Nm
Note:
- When installing the oil pan with the engine out of the vehicle, ensure that the oil pan is flush with the cylinder block at the flywheel end.
- After installing the oil pan, wait for about 30 minutes for the sealant to dry before puffing in engine oil.
