Flange shaft oil seals, replacing (transmission installed)
- Observe general repair instructions.

Special tools and workshop equipment required





^ VW 771 Multi - purpose tool
^ VW 771/37 Puller hooks





^ 3106 Drift

Removing
Before replacing left- hand oil seal:
- Remove drive axle
Before replacing right- hand oil seal:
- Turn steering to right to full lock stop.
- Remove drive axle protective shield from engine, if fitted.
- Disconnect drive axle from flange shaft.
- Tie - up drive axle as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive axle.





- Place drip tray underneath.
- Remove flange shaft cone head bolt.





- Remove flange shaft with spring.
- Pull out seal.

Notes:
^ Do not damage sleeve, otherwise leaks will occur.
^ Replace sleeve if damaged.

Installing





- Drive seal into sleeve onto stop. When doing this, do not cant seal.
- Fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with multipurpose grease.
- Insert flange shaft.
- Install cone head bolt into flange shaft threaded piece.
- Install left - hand drive axle or attach right - hand drive axle to flange shaft.
- Install drive axle protective cap if necessary.
- Top up transmission oil.
