Front Flexible Coupling
Front flexible coupling, removing and installing
A twin pillar lifting platform should be used when working on the driveshaft.
Notes: Before removing, mark the positions of all parts in relation to each other. Reinstall in the same position otherwise imbalance will be excessive and the bearings could be damaged, which could cause rumbling noises.
Removing
- Remove noise insulation in the center (arrows).
Vehicles with 1 charge air cooler
- Disconnect air hose for turbocharger from air intake pipe.
All models
- If fitted, unbolt exhaust mounting from subframe.
- Disconnect exhaust system at clamp (arrows).
- Push clamp toward rear of vehicle.
- Unbolt driveshaft from flexible coupling on bevel box (arrows).
Notes: Use a suitable lever to brace the triangular flange when loosening the bolts.
- Press the front driveshaft tube as far back as possible.
Notes: The engine and transmission will move forward slightly when the bolts - A - are loosened (Fig. N34-087, Refer to Drive/Propeller Shaft. Take care not to damage seal (arrow) in driveshaft flange when removing and installing.
- Unbolt pendulum support from subframe (arrows - A -).
- Press engine/transmission forward carefully.
- Unbolt flexible coupling from flange on bevel box (arrows).
- Now carefully remove flexible coupling.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order, when doing this note the following:
^ All parts of the driveshaft marked must be reinstalled in the same positions in relation to each other.
^ First insert driveshaft bolts into flexible coupling, then bolt flexible coupling onto bevel box.
Installation position:
^ The open side of the heat shield should be toward the bevel box.
^ Three projecting sleeves on the transmission flange and driveshaft flange engage in the mounting holes in the flexible coupling.
Notes:
^ Do not damage the seal (arrow) in the driveshaft flange. The driveshaft must be replaced if the seal is damaged.
^ Ensure driveshaft is horizontal when fitting it on the guide pin.
- Align exhaust system free of stress.
