Driveshaft - Nuts Appear to be Missing at Differential

39 08 04

2010328/3

November 14, 2008.

Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 39 number 04-01 dated March 25, 2004 for reasons listed below.

Affected Vehicles

39 Driveshaft nuts appear to be missing at rear differential

Condition

Nuts or washers appear to be missing on driveshaft.

Technical Background

Driveshaft bolts may protrude beyond the threaded flange (Figure 1), giving the appearance that the nuts/washers are missing.

- Specifically weighted nuts/washers may be used to balance the driveshaft on one, two or all three bolts.

- It is also possible that nuts/washers may not be installed on any bolt.

Production Solution

Service

NOTE:
Do not install nuts or washers on the bolts even if nuts or washers appear to be missing on the driveshaft (not installed on one, two or three bolts). Installing nuts or washers on the bolts may cause the driveshaft to become out of balance.

When service requires driveshaft to be removed or disconnected, if nuts or washers have been installed on any of the driveshaft bolts (Figure 1, 1) during production:

1. Mark location of any installed nut/washers.

2. Reinstall nuts/washers in the exact location when reinstalling the driveshaft.

NOTE:
Installing nuts or washers in the wrong location may cause driveshaft vibration.
