Ball Joint: Service and Repair

Ball joint, removing and installing

Special tools and equipment





- 3287A ball joint puller





- VAG1332 torque wrench: 40 - 200 Nm

Removing
- Take off wheel.

Notes: Mark the installation positions of the nuts.




- Remove lower nuts on ball joint.





- Remove upper nut on ball joint.





- Apply ball joint puller as shown in illustration and press out ball joint.

Notes: To protect ball joint threads, leave nut on a few turns.

Installing
Tightening torques:
Ball joint to control arm 75 Nm
Use new nuts
Ball joint to wheel hearing housing 75 Nm





- Secure ball joint to control arm (nuts on old marks).

Notes: Commercially available ring insertion tools (A/F 18 mm) can also be used instead of VAG 1332/10 e.g.: Stahlwille 732/10 or Hazet 6630c18.





-1- Torx key T40

- Install ball joint in wheel bearing housing.
- Screw on new self-locking nut, and counter- hold using T40 Torx key.

Notes: Ensure that boot is not damaged or twisted.
