Rear Axle Beam Assembly, Overview
Notes:
- Do not attempt to weld or straighten axle beam or stub axle.
- Always replace self - locking nuts.
1 - Wheel bolt
- Tighten to 120 Nm
2 - Phillips - head screw
3 - Brake disc
4 - Protective cap
- Always replace
- An appropriate seal can only be achieved with a new protective cap. Only then can an optimal function and long service life be assured
5 - Self - locking 12 - point nut
- Tighten to (175 Nm)
- Always replace
6 - Wheel hub with wheel bearing
Wheel bearing and wheel hub are installed together in one housing.
This wheel bearing and wheel hub unit is maintenance free and play free. It is not possible to adjust or service the unit.
- Pressing out end in; Refer to wheel bearing
7 - Hex - bolt
- Tighten to 60 Nm
- Always replace
8 - Backing plate
9 - Bracket for parking brake cable
10 - Parking brake cable
11 - Self - locking hex - nut
- Tighten to 80 Nm
- Always replace
- Axle beam must be in horizontal position (non load - bearing condition) when tightening nut
12 - Hex bolt, 30 Nm plus additional 90° (1/4 turn)
- Always replace
- Thread in chassis can be repaired with wire thread insert according to DIN 8140 (Heli - Coil). Thread insert must be the same length as the thread in the chassis.
These repairs can only be performed on two nuts per side.
13 - Hex - bolt
- Tighten to 80 Nm
- Always replace
14 - Mounting bracket for rear axle
- After installing, check path of rear axle, adjust if necessary
- If possible, do not loosen when removing rear axle
15 - Bracket for parking brake cable
16 - Bonded rubber bushing
- Grease bushing with assembly past G 052 150 A2
17 - Axle beam
- Contact surfaces and threaded holes for stub axle must be free of paint and dirt
18 - ABS wheel speed sensor
19 - Socket - head bolt
- Tighten to 8 Nm
20 - Hex bolt
- Tighten to 20 Nm plus additional 45° (1/8 turn)
21 - Vibration dampener
22 - Base plate
Material: zinc
- Check base plate for damage
23 - Coil spring
- Note differing coil spring versions, see vehicle data label
24 - Spring support
25 - Hex - bolt
- Tighten to 60 Nm
- Always replace after removal
26 Hex bolt, 30 Nm plus additional 90° (1/4 turn)
- Always replace
- Thread in chassis can be repaired with wire thread insert according to DIN 8140 (Heli - Coil). Thread insert must be the same length as the thread in the chassis.
These repairs can only be performed on one nut per side.
27 - Suspension strut
- Functional check go to Shock Absorber, Service and Repair
28 - Hex nut
- Always replace
- Axle beam must be in center position when tightening nut. It is recommended that a second person put weight on rear of vehicle while tightening
29 - Stub axle
- Straightening work prohibited
- Thread - cutting prohibited
30 - Skid plate
31 - Socket - head bolt
- Tighten to 65 Nm
- Always replace
32 - Brake caliper
- Servicing; Refer to Brakes and Traction Control
