Steering column, removing and installing

Notes:
- Replacement steering columns are fitted with a locking device for protection during transport. This transport lock must be pulled out after the steering column has been installed.
- It is advisable to keep the transport lock safely; it can be used when removing the steering column.
- Always replace self - locking nuts and bolts.
- Welding and straightening work on steering components is not permitted.





- New steering columns are supplied with a mounting bush and shear bolt.
- Insert the mounting bush in the new steering column and tighten the shear bolt until the head shears off.

Removing
- Remove airbag unit and airbag steering wheel.
- Remove storage compartment on driver's side.





- Unscrew bolts - 1 - and remove height adjustment handle.
- Unscrew bolts - 2 -, - 3 - and - 4 -.
- Remove upper and lower sections of steering column trim.





- Unplug connector - 1 -.
- Loosen bolt - 2 - on clamp until steering column switch can be removed.
- Unplug connectors for turn signals and windscreen wipers, and place steering column switch to one side.

This illustration shows the return ring on a vehicle without ESP.

WARNING: Spiral spring remains on steering column switch. Make sure that the spiral spring is not twisted out of the center position when setting aside the steering column switch.





- Unscrew plastic nuts - 1 - and remove cover - A -.

Securing steering column before removal
An assembly aid is required so that the upper and lower parts of the steering column do not pull apart when pulling off steering box.
If the upper and lower parts of the steering column are pulled too far apart or pushed too close together, the splines separate.
It is possible that rattling noises will occur later if the splines are not in their original installation position.
- Push or pull steering column together or apart until the hole is visible.





- Insert a clip (or similar) in the hole.





- Remove hex bolt - 1 -.
- Pull universal joint off steering box.





- Unscrew nut - 1 - on central tube and pull out hex bolt.
- Unscrew bolts - 2 -.
- Remove steering column.

When installing, pay particular attention to the following points:





Note:
- Every new steering column is supplied with new bushing and shear bolt.
- Steering Angle Sensor -G85- must be adjusted anew after installing the steering column.

- Insert the mounting bushing in the new steering column and tighten the shear bolt until the head shears off.

- Insert steering column in central tube together with mounting bush (arrow - A -).
- Insert hex bolt for mounting bush from right - hand side.
- Now bolt steering column in position using new bolts - 2 - (20 Nm/15 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten nut - 1 - to 9.5 Nm (84 inch lbs.).
- Pull out transport lock (arrow - B -).





- Slide universal joint onto steering pinion and secure using new bolt - 1 - 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
- Install universal joint cover/footrest.
- Attach connectors for ignition lock and immobilizer.

- Attach steering column switch to steering lock housing.
- Fit steering wheel provisionally, using the old bolt.
- Align steering column switch horizontally and set distance - a -, then tighten clamping screw - 3 -.
- Remove steering wheel again.
- Fit upper and lower surrounds.
- Fit upper and lower sections of trim for steering column switch.
- Install storage compartment on driver's side
- Install airbag steering wheel and airbag unit.
