Power Steering Pump: Testing and Inspection


Power steering pump delivery pressure, checking
Special tools and equipment





- 3094 Hose clamps
- VAG1402 Power steering test unit
- VAG 1402/2 Adapter
- VAG1402/3 Adapter
- VAG1402/4 Adapter
- VAG1402/6 Hose from adapter set

Vehicles with power steering pump in lower position
Test requirements:
- Belt and belt tension OK
- System not leaking
- Hoses/pipes are not kinked or restricted





- Clamp return hose with hose clamp 3094.
- Remove noise insulation tray.





- Clamp suction hose with hose clamp 3094.
- Place oil tray under vehicle.
- Disconnect pressure pipe at pump.

Notes: Vehicles with pressure switch: first unplug connector and unscrew switch.





- Fit adapter - 1 -.
- Use a sealing ring.

- Connect pressure gauge VAG1402.
A - Pressure switch

3 - Banjo bolt

6 - VAG1402 Hose from pressure gauge

- Remove hose clamp 3094 from suction and return hoses.
- Start engine and if necessary, add fluid to reservoir.
- Turn steering wheel approximately 10 times from lock to lock.
- Now check delivery pressure.
- With engine running at idling speed, close cut - off valve (not longer than 5 seconds) and read off pressure.
Specification: 110 - 120 bar

Notes:
- If the reading is higher or lower than specified replace pump:
Removing and installing power steering pump: vehicles with pump in lower position.
- If reservoir fluid level is low then check steering system for leaks.
- For leaks at the pinion first check the pipes/pipe connections for leaks and if necessary, tighten and wipe dry.
- If the pinion seal or the rack seals in steering box housing are leaking then replace steering box.
- To check the rack seals loosen the hose clip on the boot and push boot to one side.
