Ultrasonic Interior Monitoring, On Board Diagnostic (OBD)

General notes

The ultrasonic interior monitoring is only available for vehicles equipped with an anti-theft alarm.

The addition of an ultrasonic interior monitoring system increases the level of protection offered by the anti-theft alarm.

The interior monitoring will set off the anti-theft alarm if an attempt is made to enter the vehicle via the side windows.

Operation
The ultrasonic interior monitoring comprises the following elements:

- Ultrasonic sensor module -G209-
- interior monitoring switch -E183-

The sensor module behind the interior light monitors the side windows and transmits the monitoring signal to the Central Locking Control Module.

If the monitoring signal changes, the Central Locking Control Module will trigger the alarm.

The Central Locking Control Module activates the indicator lamps next to the door locking knobs. These indicator lamps also serve as an additional means of diagnosing DTCs in the interior monitor.

The interior monitoring switch is used to switch off the interior monitoring manually when locking the vehicle. (The interior monitoring will be reactivated automatically the next time the vehicle is unlocked and locked again.)

For all test possibilities, a system dependant waiting time of at least 30 seconds must be observed for a locked vehicle.

The ultrasonic sensor module has an extensive On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capability. If one of the systems components fails, a DTC is stored in the DTC memory of the control module. The malfunction can be identified using scan tools VAG 1551, or VAG 1552 and VAS 5051.

Component overview

- -1- Radar interior monitoring control module - G303-
- Switch for passenger compartment monitoring - E183-

-1- Radar interior monitoring control module -G303- is located between the front seats in the central console below the grip cavity of the parking brake lever and can be installed and hidden in the central console.

The interior protection functions like an impulse radar. The system is a "protective capsule" with sharp boundaries in the form of a half-circle shell, whose penetration is detected at any time. An alarm signal is sent to the control module for central locking and the alarm is triggered.

There are areas in the vehicle which cannot be monitored, e.g.. areas shielded by seat positioning, or areas limited by the physical characteristic of the half-circle.

Metallic objects in the area of the sensor module shield microwaves. This can lead to an inability for the alarm to be triggered in certain areas (behind the metallic object) or in an extreme case for the alarm to not be triggered at all.

If the monitoring signal deviates, the Central Locking Control Module triggers the alarm.

The sensor module contains extensive On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capability. If malfunctions occur at system components, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are stored. Malfunctions can be identified using the VAG 1551 tester or VAG 1552 Scan Tool (ST) as well as with VAS 5051 tester.
