Driveshaft, removing and installing
Special tools and equipment

^ 3139 Alignment fixture - 4w driveshaft

^ 3139/3 Spacers

Removing drive shaft
^ Read notes.
^ Remove crossmember below exhaust system if installed.
^ Remove rear part of exhaust system behind clamping sleeve(s):

^ Remove heat shields for driveshaft from body (arrows).

^ Remove heat shield for driveshaft from cover for Torsen differential (arrows).

^ Check whether there is a factory marking (colored marking) on driveshaft and at flange/driveshaft at rear final drive. If not, mark location of driveshaft flange (arrow -A-) to rear final drive (arrow -B-) with color.
^ Remove upper three mounting bolts for each drive shaft constant velocity joint.

^ Attach 3139 alignment fixture with 3139/3 spacing devices and tighten plastic nuts.

Note: Never set alignment fixture on balance plates.

^ Remove remaining three mounting bolts at front and rear constant velocity joints

^ Remove securing nuts (arrows) for intermediate bearing and remove driveshaft with alignment fixture.

Note: Only store and move driveshaft fully extended.

Installing drive shaft
Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:

Note:

^ For proper balance, the drive shaft flanges (arrow A) and the rear final drive (arrow B) must be installed so that the factory color markings or markings which were made afterward are aligned.
^ If a new drive shaft is installed and the factory color markings on the rear final drive flange is no longer visible, check radial run out at flange/drive shaft and align color marking on drive shaft to new marking on flange.
^ Replace gaskets on drive flanges (remove protective film and attach gasket to drive flanges).
^ After disconnecting driveshaft from rear final drive, an additional balance washer (Mick washer) Mat may be located between shim and bolt head may not be reinstalled.
^ After removing drive shaft, always remove any remaining locking fluid from thread bores in the transmission drive flanges and the rear final drive. Otherwise there is a possibility that the new bolts may get jammed when installed and shear when removed.
^ Cleaning can be performed with a thread cutter.
^ Replace drive shaft bolts (self-locking).

^ Adjust drive shaft after installing.
^ Install exhaust system free of stress.
