Bonded rubber bushing for axle beam (steel), replacing





Special tools and equipment
^ VW402 thrust plate
^ 3291 installation tool
^ 3346 installation tool
^ 3372 pressing out tool
^ 3354/1 Thrust piece

Bonded rubber bushing can only be removed and installed with axle beam lowered.
Aside from stabilizer bar, no other parts have to be removed from axle beam.

Mark Installation position of bonded rubber bushing on axle beam.
In order that new bonded rubber bushings can be reinstalled in the correct position, installation position of defective bonded rubber bushings must be marked before they are pulled out.
^ Use a screwdriver to pry aluminum washer off of bonded rubber bushing.





^ Use a felt-tip pen, for example, to draw the semicircular recess (arrow) on axle beam.





Pulling out bonded rubber bushings
^ Attach tools as shown in figure.
^ Remove bonded rubber bushing by turning spindle.

Pulling in bonded rubber bushing
Front and rear bonded rubber bushings are different

Make sure to Install them In the right place.








1. Bonded rubber bushing





^ Bonded rubber bushing must be inserted so that recess (arrow) faces marking -1-.
Eccentric hole -B- in bonded rubber bushing must point in direction of travel (arrow -A-).





^ Now attach bonded rubber bushing and special tools.

Note: To press in the bonded rubber bushings use, for example, installation sliding oil G294421AI

Make sure that bonded rubber bushing does not tilt while It Is being pulled In, otherwise outer ring could be damaged!





^ Pull in bonded rubber bushing until chamfer (arrows) is in front of hole for axle body.
^ Now check whether chamfer of outer ring makes uniform contact. Correct installation position again, if necessary.
^ Now, slowly pull the bonded rubber bushing completely in.

Note: While the bonded rubber bushing is being pulled in, the tools and bonded rubber bushing must be guided by a second mechanic.

Installing axle beam





Arrows on aluminum washers of bonded rubber bushing must face opposite direction of travel.
1. Hex bolt
110 Nm plus additional 90°
Always use new bolts.
2. Aluminum washer for front bonded rubber bushing
3. Aluminum washer for rear bonded rubber bushing
^ Tighten bolts for axle beam to 110 Nm plus additional 90°
Thread in body can be repaired with thread insert made of wire according to DIN 8140 (Helicoil). Thread insert must have same length as thread in body.
