Track Control Link (Aluminum Wheel Bearing Housing), Removing and Installing
Track control link (aluminum wheel bearing housing), removing and installing
Removing
^ Remove hubcap, for light-alloy wheels pull off center cap (use pulling hook in vehicle tools).
^ Remove wheel.
Note: For vehicles with headlight vertical aim control refer to Vehicle Level Sensor.
^ Secure brake disc using a wheel bolt.
^ Detach brake caliper and fasten to body.
Note:
^ Protect CV boot from damage, e.g.: place a leather cloth in between.
^ For safety reasons, put collar nut back on joint bolt of track control link with about 4 turns, so that it is flush.
^ Be sure that both lever arms are parallel to each other during greatest applied pressure, adjust if necessary.
^ Press joint bolts of track control link off conical seating.
To unscrew hex bolt from suspension strut/track control link, you must detach guide link from wheel bearing housing.
Use 4 mm socket wrench to hold joint bolt if necessary.
^ Unscrew nut from joint bolt of guide link
Note:
^ For safety reasons, put collar nut back on joint bolt of guide link with about 4 turns, so that it is flush.
^ Be sure that both lever arms are parallel to each other during greatest applied pressure, adjust if necessary.
^ Unscrew nut from joint bolt of guide link, then press off joint bolt.
Be careful not to damage CV boot in the process!
^ Unscrew hex bolt -1-.
^ Unscrew ribbed nuts -2- and -3-, and take off coupling.
Note: In order not to damage the joints of the upper links, it is necessary to use VAG1383-A (engine and transmission lifter), for example, to brace against too strong rebound.
^ Unscrew hex bolt -4-.
^ Remove track control link.
Installing
^ Replace all bolts and nuts.
^ Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent The bolted connections on the suspension links should therefore only be tightened when the vehicle is standing on the ground.
^ Put in new hex bolt -4- and new hex nut.
^ Tighten to 80 Nm plus additional 90° turn.
^ Tighten nuts on joint bolts (guide link / track control link) to 125 Nm.
^ Tighten hex nut -1- to 90 Nm.
Note change in coupling and in tightening torques
^ The arrow on the coupling points in the direction of travel
^ Tighten nut -2- to 40 Nm plus additional 90°
^ Tighten nut -3- to 60 Nm.
^ Mount brake disc, screw on brake caliper, and tighten to 90 Nm (M 14 x 1.5 x 38).
