Mounting bracket (steel wheel bearing housing), removing and installing
Removing
^ Remove hubcap, for light-alloy wheels pull off center cap (use pulling hook in vehicle tools).
^ Remove wheel.





^ Remove clip -1- with pliers.

Note: This clip does not have to be reused.

^ Remove nut -2- and hex bolt, and lift out both links.
Slits in wheel bearing housing may not be widened with a chisel or similar tool!





^ Protect boot on steering gear from damage.
Figure shows steering gear disassembled, to illustrate it more clearly.
If you wish to order protective sleeve -1-, its part number is 893 512 137.
^ Protective sleeve -1- must have a strip having dimension A from 20 to 25 mm cut out of it.
^ Carefully deburr cut edges.
^ Push protective sleeve over boot on steering gear.
The open side with slit should face downward.
To unscrew hex bolt from suspension strut/track control link, you must detach guide link from wheel bearing housing.
Use 4 mm socket wrench to hold joint bolt if necessary.





^ Unscrew nut from joint bolt of guide link, then press off joint bolt.
Be careful not to damage CV boot in the process!
^ Pull cable of ABS wheel speed sensor out of bracket on brake caliper.

Note: In order not to damage joints of lower links, it is necessary to use engine/transmission jack VAG1383-A, to brace against too strong rebound.





^ Unscrew hex bolt -1-, from suspension strut/track control link.
^ Swing wheel bearing housing away to the side.





^ Unscrew hex bolt -1- in radiator tank.
^ Remove suspension strut with mounting bracket.
Be careful not to damage CV boot in the process!

Unscrew upper links from mounting bracket





^Clamp suspension strut in vise (use protective pads).
^ Unscrew both links (arrows).
^ Unscrew nuts -1-, and take off mounting bracket.

Installing





F = Direction of travel
R = Right mounting bracket
L = Left mounting bracket
^ Holes in spring seat (arrows) of suspension strut -1- must face middle of vehicle.
^ Tighten nuts -2- to 20 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

Installing upper links to mounting bracket





^ Line up top link, dimension (A) = 57 ± 2 mm.
^ Replace all bolts and nuts.
^ Tighten hex bolts -1 - of both links to 50 Nm, plus additional 90° turn.





^ Insert suspension strut with mounting bracket into suspension strut tower. Tighten hex bolts -1- to 75 Nm.

Note: Make sure washers are correctly seated.

^ Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent The bolted connections on the suspension links should therefore only be tightened when the vehicle is standing on the ground.





^ Insert fork head of suspension strut into control arm, tighten nut -1- to 90 Nm.

Note: Remove any adhesive remaining on thread of joint bolt.
^ Track control link/guide link to wheel carrier, tighten to 100 Nm.
^ Insert both upper links, tighten nuts -2- to 40 Nm.
^ Press upper links down as far as possible when tightening!
^ Insert cable of ABS wheel speed sensor into bracket on brake caliper.
^ Mount wheel.
Suspension adjustment at front axle must be checked on an alignment stand recommended by VW/Audi, and corrected, if necessary.
