Tie Rod: Service and Repair
Tie rods, removing and installing
Special tools and equipment
^ VAG1923 open end wrench insert
^ VAG 1332 torque wrench
Measurement range: 40 to 200 Nm.
Note:
^ Tie rods at left and right are identical
^ Tie rods can be removed and installed with steering gear installed.
Removing
^ Remove front wheel.
^ Remove hex bolt -1- and bolt -2-.
^ Remove tie rod.
^ Unscrew plastic nut -1-.
^ Pry out clip -2-.
^ Remove cover for tie rod.
Note: Shown without wheel bearing housing and strut for the sake of illustration.
^ Open clamps at boot
^ Pull boot as far toward outside as possible.
^ Remove tie rod using VAG1923 special tool.
^ Now replace boot or tie rod depending on extent of damage.
Installing
^ Tighten be rod to 100 Nm
^ When installing boot be sure:
The smaller diameter of boot snaps into groove at tie rod.
The boot does not get twisted.
^ Replace inner (large) clamp.
^ Check alignment.
