Power steering gear, removing and installing
Special tools and equipment





^ 3094 hose clamps





^ VAG1907 bolt for centering steering

CAUTION: Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
^ Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
^ Switch the Ignition off.
^ Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
^ On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-off the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery.
^ After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows according to Owner's Manual.
^ After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-on the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module.

Removing
^ Remove plenum chamber cover.
^ Remove battery.
^ Remove drivers side storage compartment.
^ Put wheels in straight-ahead position





^ Remove nut -1- at universal joint.
^ Release tension on eccentric bolt by turning adjusting bolt (Torx T50) clockwise and remove bolt





^ Swing universal joint to side.
^ Remove ignition key when steering wheel is centered.
^ Move steering wheel slightly to engage steering lock.

Note: If the steering wheel is turned too much with the steering gear removed, the spiral spring from the airbag may get turned too far and damaged.





^ Pinch off intake line and return line using 3094 hose clamps.
^ Remove front wheels.





^ Remove hex bolt -1- and bolt -2-.
^ Remove tie rod.





^ Remove nut-1-.
^ Pry out clip -2-.
^ Remove cover.

Note: Shown without wheel bearing housing and strut for the sake of illustration.

Work outline only valid for 2.7 BiTurbo
^ Lower subframe at rear.
Work outline,
^ Removing left exhaust pipe
^ Remove shielding panel.
Work outline is valid for all vehicles
^ Place pan underneath vehicle to collect hydraulic fluid.





^ Unbolt banjo bolt for return hose (22 mm wrench) from steering gear.





^ Unbolt banjo bolt for pressure hose (19 mm wrench) from steering gear.
^ For vehicles with Servotronic, disconnect connector from Servotronic valve.





^ Unbolt mounting points -1-, -2-, and -3- from steering gear.
^ Remove steering gear through left wheel housing (second technician required).

Installing





Use VAG1907 to removed center steering gear.
^ Remove socket-head bolt -1- from steering gear.
^ Move rack until centering position on rack (arrow) aligns with thread -2-
^ Hand-tighten VAG 1907. - Pay attention to bulkhead boot.

Note: Always replace damaged seals. Check seal for proper seating!





^ Position steering gear on plenum.

Note: Make sure threads and contact surfaces of bolts are free of oil and grease.

^ Install bolts -1- and -2-, but do not tighten.
^ Screw in bolt -3- and tighten.
^ Tighten bolts -1- and -2-.
^ Screw on return hose and tighten banjo bolt (22 mm wrench) to 50 Nm.
^ Screw on pressure hose and tighten banjo fitting (19 mm wrench) to 40 Nm.
^ Release steering lock.
^ Center steering wheel, then install universal join on steering pinion.
^ Install adjusting bolt (Torx T50) and tighten counterclockwise.





^ Unbolt VAG 1907 tool from steering gear.
1. Socket head bolt
2. Thread bore in steering gear
^ Seal steering gear using hex socket bolt -1-; Tighten to 13 Nm.
^ Tighten hex nut for adjusting bolt to 30 Nm.
^ Install driver's side storage compartment.
^ Install wheel housing cover.
^ After completing installation of steering gear, remove 3094 hose clamps.
^ For the 2.7 BiTurbo, secure exhaust pipe, shielding panel and subframe.

^ Install battery
^ Check fluid level.
^ Bleed steering system.
^ Check steering system for proper seal.
^ Check alignment.
