Side Curtain Protection Airbag (Avant), Removing And Installing

WARNING: Observe safety precautions for working on airbags and side curtain airbags.







1 - Side curtain airbag

Removing
See Caution before beginning repairs on electrical system
- Note radio code (for vehicles equipped with coded anti-theft radio / radio navigation system).
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap / cable and cover the negative battery post.
- Remove intermediate piece for B-pillar trim.







- Remove D-pillar trim
- Remove roof frame trim panel.
- Remove A-pillar trim
- Disconnect harness connector for side curtain airbag Fig. 3.
- Remove bolts - 4 - and - 5 -.
- Remove bolt - 7 -.
- Remove bracket - 11 - (2x) from clamp at A-pillar.
- Remove bracket - 2 - (5x) from roof frame.
- Place front part of airbag module on seats.







- Remove bolts - 6 - (2x) Fig. 1.
- Remove igniter - 10 - at roof frame Fig. 1.
- Take strap - 3 - and form a loop with igniter - 10 -.
- Remove side curtain airbag - 1 - from vehicle.

WARNING: Always observe the installation instructions for the side curtain airbag.

Installing
- Remove side curtain airbag - 1 - from transport container as a loop and secure side curtain - 1 - in the following sequence.







- Secure igniter - 10 - at roof frame Fig. 1.
- Insert third bracket - 2 -.
- Remove strap - 3 - from igniter - 10 -.
- Insert remaining brackets - 2 -.
- Insert brackets - 11 -.
- Install screws - 6 - (2x) Fig. 1.
- Secure airbag module at B-pillar Fig. 2.
- Secure brackets - 2 - using screws - 5 - (6x).
- Install bolts - 4 - at straps - 3 -.
- Rest of installation is reverse of removal
- Switch on ignition.

WARNING: Make sure that nobody is in the vehicle interior.

See Caution for connecting Telematics battery.
- Connect battery.







2 - Brackets (5x)
3 - Strap
4 - Screws (2x)
- Tightening torque: 3.5 Nm (31 in.lb)
- Self-locking
- Always replace
- Always clean threaded holes for screws (e.g. using a tap)
- For loose (threaded) inserts, tighten inserts using pliers.
- Use VAS 5122 and VAG 1783







5 - Screws (6x)
- Tightening torque: 3.5 Nm (31 in.lb)
- Self-locking
- Always replace
- Always clean threaded holes for screws (e.g. using a tap)
- For loose (threaded) inserts, tighten inserts using pliers.
6 - Screws (2x)
- Tightening torque: 3.5 Nm (31 in.lb)
- Self-locking
- Always replace
- Always clean threaded holes for screws (e.g. using a tap)
- For loose (threaded) inserts, tighten inserts using pliers.







7 - Screw
- Self-locking
- Always replace
- Always clean threaded holes for screws (e.g. using a tap)
- For loose (threaded) inserts, tighten inserts using pliers.
8 - Anchoring strap
9 - Side curtain airbag harness connector
10 - Igniter
11 - Holding strap

- Disengage airbag connector - 9 - from igniter - 10 - before removing screws - 6 -
- Disconnect airbag connector - 9 - from igniter - 10 -.
- Screws - 6 - (2x)
Tightening torque: 3.5 Nm (31 in.lb)
8 - Anchoring strap
- Screw - 7 -.
Tightening torque: 3.5 Nm (31 in.lb)
- Unclip/clip bracket - A - at roof frame - B -.

1 - Side curtain airbag
B-Insert securing pin in guide hole below threaded hole.
- Bolt on strap - A - at B-pillar.
- Install screws - 5 -.
Tightening torque: 3.5 Nm (31 in.lb)

- Press catches -A- and disconnect connector in direction of arrow.

NOTE:
- After connecting battery, vehicle options (radio, clock, window regulator) must be checked according to repair manual and/or Owner's Manual.
- If the airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K75- signals a malfunction, DTC memory must be erased and then checked again using the VAG 1551 scan tool.
