^ VW 519 pipe piece
^ 3- Kukko 15-17 extractor
^ VAG 1383 A Engine/transmission jack
Removing
^ Remove hubcap, for light-alloy wheels pull off center cap (use pulling hook in vehicle tools).
^ Unscrew hex bolt for drive axle. (Only loosen when vehicle is standing on its wheels: danger of accident).
^ Remove wheel.
^ Secure brake disc using a wheel bolt.
^ Unscrew hex bolt -2-.
^ Pull cable of ABS wheel speed sensor out of bracket on wheel bearing housing.
^ Unscrew bolts -1- from brake caliper and remove brake caliper.
^ Re-attach brake line holder. Screw in and tighten hex bolt -2-.
^ Attach brake caliper to body so that its weight cannot bend or damage brake line.
^ Unscrew bolt-1- for ABS wheel speed sensor.
Note:
^ Fasten brake caliper to body with tie wire.
^ Do not allow brake caliper to hang on brake hose.
^ Remove brake disc.
^ Remove nut -1- and hex bolt, and lift out both links -2-.
Slits in wheel bearing housing may not be widened with a chisel or similar tool'
^ Swing away wheel bearing housing toward side, in direction of arrow, while pulling drive axle end out of wheel hub.
^ Remove wheel bearing housing.
^ Unscrew spherical cap bolts -1-.
^ Remove wheel bearing unit.

^ When pressing in, pressure piece -VW511- must rest only against bearing inner race.
Installing
^ Tightening torque of spherical cap bolts -1-, 80 Nm plus additional 90 turn.
^ Push outer joint of drive axle into wheel hub and hand-tighten new hex bolt.
Note: Remove any glue remaining on thread of joint bolt.
^ Insert both joint bolts of top control arm into wheel bearing housing.
^ Tighten new self-locking nuts -1- to 40 Nm.
^ Press upper control arm down as far as possible when tightening!
^ Install ABS wheel speed sensor
^ Mount brake disc, screw on brake caliper, and tighten to 190 Nm (M 14 x 1.5 x 38).
^ Mount wheel and tighten to 120 Nm.
^ Tighten hex bolt for drive axle.
Tightening torques:
Hex bolt M 14: 115 Nm plus additional 180° turn.
Hex bolt M 16: 190 Nm plus additional 180° turn.
Observe work sequence
Suspension adjustment at front axle must be checked on an alignment stand recommended by VW/Audi, and corrected, if necessary.
